The contention of our early pioneers that chiropractic, as defined by Palmer: should be studied, practiced, regulated and researched as a discipline in its own right and not combined with other approaches, "natural " or otherwise, was considered draconian by some but succeeded in establishing mainstream chiropractic in Australia as a separate identity. The importance of this was the shaping of today's profession as being unencumbered by such subsidiary modalities as iridology, acupuncture and homoeopathy that many non-Palmer chiropractors tended to practise alongside spinal adjustments."</p>
