The Lagonda 4-1/2 Litre, with its magnificent presence and its sheer size, was perhaps the most visually impressive of the 1930s British supercars. It was also fast. Even the first model, the M45, could be relied on to reach more than 90mph. The car's reputation was further boosted by the car's 1935 Le Mans win. In the same year, W.O. Bentley joined the firm, and proceeded to refine and revise the car, resulting in the LG45 and the superb V12. This book opens with an exposition of the earlier history of Lagonda and the background to its introduction of the 4 1/2 Litre M45 in 1933. Then comes a highly detailed description of the car, covering every aspect of the chassis, running gear, engine and transmission. The liberation of Europe and the Far East meant that these export markets had been opened up again too.This book traces the path of the British lorry through 20 years via the manufacturers' own sales and publicity material, from the revolutionary - but now forgotten - Jensen to classics like the Bedford TK. During the period covered there were approximately 40 manufacturers of commercial vehicles in the United Kingdom. Several were small or specialized firms with limited production while others became absorbed into more successful companies. By 1965 only a few of the larger firms remained, and individuality was fast becoming just a memory.

In 1919 the small English firm of AC Cars came out with a new engine which, amazingly, was to power their products for more than 40 years. It was a six-cylinder unit with alloy block, cast-iron wet liners and a single overhead camshaft. The author opens with a review of the company’s products prior to the introduction of the 16/66 model in 1933. He goes on to give highly detailed descriptions of all models and variants - 16/70, 16/80, 16/90, and the post-war Ace, Aceca and Greyhound - covering every aspect of the chassis, running gear, engines and transmissions, and discusses the changes made to specifications and equipment during production. The history of the cars in competition is studied, and the author also advises on the practicalities of owning any of these models today, including common problems, parts availability, maintenance and preservation. There are also more than 150 black-and-white photographs from archive sources.

S C H Davis, known to friends and fans as Sammy, is one of the most popular and enduring figures in the history of British motor sport, universally remembered for his heroic, glorious victory for Bentley at Le Mans in 1927.  Born in the 1880s, he experienced and was involved in the earliest days of motoring before going off to the First World War in 1914. Though injured, he survived the War and in 1919 joined the staff of The Autocar. In the 1920s he earned a reputation as a fast, reliable and intelligent driver in competition, showing a profound sympathy and understanding of machinery. This activity, along with journalism, continued into the 1950s.  When hostilities broke out again in 1939, though now in his 50s and too old to enlist, he was able to wrangle his way into the war, and served through to 1945.  This is his last autobiography, crowning the two volumes of his experiences that were published in 1932 and 1949. It was drafted in the 1960s, when he was in his 80s, but was never published.
