The Autobiography of a Young Woman Who Survived the Horrors of the Nazi Death Camps. Survival is an autobiography in which the author relates her experiences and her struggle to survive during her captivity as a young, 18-year-old girl in the three German concentration camps: Auschwitz, Bremen, and Bergen Belsen. Being of Jewish descent she had been deported with her family and in the camps encountered the danger and the probability of being killed one way or another on a daily basis. She also depicts the senseless deaths of her fellow prisoners. The book gives an insight into the author's childhood and adolescent years, where the concept of anything like this happening was beyond belief. The reader finds out about her family background and the historical events that took place in her native city in Romania during that time. The political changes which occurred during World War II played a crucial role in her destiny and the fate of the Jewish people. Magda also conveys how she coped with the grief and pain of losing so many members of her family, including her father, in the Holocaust. Then she speaks about her gradual recovery from the wounds of the Holocaust and her ultimate reunion with her mother. Magda's poetry is included in the book.

From the Author's Prologue I wrote the original manuscript of this book in 2003, prior to any immediately obvious signs that a crash of the financial markets was on the near (one to five years) horizon. At that time I presented the manuscript to my employer, I was a trader for a major multinational bank, and asked permission to publish it. Since the manuscript was critical of Greenspan and his policies, and stated clearly where they would probably lead us, permission was not granted. At that time, major financial institutions hesitated to challenge Greenspan, and they were very cautious about allowing any of their employees to do so in a public forum. Now that I have left the bank, and the result of Greenspan's policies have been realized, I have decided that it is time to air these opinions and share some of my concerns and suggestions for the future. This is, to be sure, not as timely now as it would have been then. However, it would be presumptuous of me to suggest that publishing this book at that time would have made any difference in what subsequently has taken place-individuals with more authority than mine tried to warn the financial community of the impending disaster, and it is now obvious that they were not listened to. ... The case against Alan Greenspan will have to stand on the evidence presented; it's up to you to decide just how egregious Greenspan's errors of judgment were and whether or not what I have said here convinces you that proper analysis of the situation at the time would have forestalled the current crisis.

From the Preface of Allan's Book  I have tried to tell the story through the memories of some of the children who were there that fateful day. I have collected memories from a number of people who were either in school at Danforth Elementary School that morning or who were otherwise affected by the explosion and resulting chaos. I have asked them to give me their stories as they remember where they were and what they were doing that morning, and to tell it as if it were happening now. Obviously, some memories fade, but what I have discovered is that the memories of that morning for most of us are as clear as if they happened this morning. I have incorporated their stories just as they gave them to me. While I do not have all the stories, the stories I do have are representative of the stories of the children who were in school that morning.   Having lived through the Texas City Disaster, I know that us children who were in school that day, or at home (the schools operated in split shifts due to overcrowding), came away from that experience very different people than when we awoke that morning. We all experienced something that few people have ever experienced outside of wartime.  Many of us saw death up close and personal. Many of us saw members of our families severely injured and severely maimed. Many of us knew children who lost one or both of their parents that day. But no matter what happened to us individually that day, no matter what the external or internal scars may be, we all came away with something few at the time gave any thought to―we had a common bond that brought us together like no other event.

She explains how, witnessing the rise of Stalinism, she and her husband fled their native land for Palestine, only to be imprisoned by the British. She relates how they endured more than a year in an internment camp on Cyprus. She provides eyewitness accounts of the birth of Israel and of a new life in the United States in 1957. After a mysterious first two years of life, Bonham found himself high heartworm positive and on death row in the San Marcos, Texas animal Shelter.
