Gnomic Book

Knives is an elegy for American manufacturing made over several years, using photography to trace the shifting relationships between masculinity, myth, and violence in a rural town whose economic base remains eviscerated by globalisation. The cutlery industry formed the economic backbone of New York s Hudson Valley for over 150 years, until the Schrade knife factory abruptly moved production to China in 2004, leaving 700 men and women out of work. The town s maximum security prison, Eastern Correctional Facility, became the largest employer in the area, shielded from the wider community by layers of secrecy. As businesses continued to close during the decade that followed, drug abuse, mental disorders, and rare cancers have become more widespread. Knives operates as two intertwined stories: one, a typological study of knives crafted in the region since the rise of the cutlery industry, provides connective tissue to the other, which deals in the realities of the local community, both within the prison and without. The project serves as a microcosm of the larger issues facing the United States, grappling with the effects of automation and outsourcing, cuts in services, and the rise of identity politics.

Calle Tredici Martiri (Alley of the Thirteen Martyrs) is a fictionalised photographic reinterpretation of Koxvold's grandfather Aldo Varisco's campaign of direct action against the Nazi occupation of Italy. The book is comprised of 144 pages of Koxvold's photographs and 80 pages of Varisco's memoirs of the resistance, and archival imagery. The book's title refers to the location of the Venetian headquarters of the National Republican Guard at Ca' Giustinian, which Varisco's team destroyed with explosives in 1944, killing 13. The following day, the German military shot 13 Italian prisoners in retribution for the attack; Varisco and his team were later captured and extensively tortured. After the war, the street alongside Ca' Giustinian was renamed "Calle Tredici Martiri." Today, the United States is involved in the longest war in the nation's history, fought against nebulous and invisible terrorists with yet no end in sight. This project explores the impossibility of photographic truth in the context of the contemporary nexus of capitalism, fascism and consumerism within which we locate ourselves. Ca' Giustinian is today the site of the offices of the Venice Biennale.

You are Masters of the Fish and Birds and All the Animals (YAMOTFABAATA) is the first monograph from Shane Rocheleau, and the second project from Gnomic Book, printed in an edition of 500. "For the past three years, I have been making work about white American masculinity. I am scarred but exceptionally privileged by it, and thus responsible to address it. White American masculinity is a construct. It is the subtext in detergent and power tool ads, crystallized at football games and in sermons, described in the design of little boys' clothing. It undergirds our politics and religiosity, and permeates our homes. And it's scary. You may notice that if you aren't white enough or man enough, they'll put you through hell. They'll tease you and shove you down and feel better about themselves for beating you. So am I winning yet, I ask? Have I won the American dream? Shahrzad Darafsheh is a 36 year old artist battling cancer in Tehran. This complex book, in a limited edition of 300, is a window into her life and experience. This book operates on several levels; as a chronicle of her journey through a sickness, an object made of various materials of different opacities evoking the fragility of skin, obscuring and revealing life's scars. As an experiment in storytelling - when read in Farsi, from right to left, the result is very different from that which an English reader will experience: it is a bilingual project that provides a view into life in a country which many of us have no knowledge of, or visibility into.

Abendlied (Evening Song) examines how individual relationships in a family are shaped by the processes of growing up, aging, and eventually letting go. It reveals how this circle of life not only contributes to an ebb and flow of connection, but also to a feeling of separation within the family bond. The project aims to look at the elements that create a family: not just the genes, but also the stories and secrets, as well as the objects that we surround ourselves with. The things that have always been there, are handed down, and make up the tangible and visible material that turns houses into homes. In this series they become poetic stand-ins for underlying emotions and the unspeakable that is unique to each family. Although a personal inquiry, Abendlied reflects on the broader psychological components of identity, heritage and belonging. How are we shaped by the place we call home? What happens to us when we lose this foundational base? How does it continue to live inside of us, even if it ceases to exist in its physical form? Can it be replaced? These questions are an essential byproduct of our human condition, and even though individual answers may vary, we are undeniably united as humans by the fact that the place we come from leaves a fundamental imprint on us.

About the Author\nMike Osborne is a photographer whose work touches on a range of themes including architecture, landscape, history, and technology, ultimately taking the form of books and exhibitions. His photographs are included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Contemporary Austin, and the University of Virginia. His first book, Floating Island, was published in 2014. His second book, Federal Triangle, will be released in 2019. His work has also appeared in publications such as the New Yorker, Time, the New York Times, and the New Republic. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Product Description Primal Sight, a collection of works by 146 artists, and essays by David Campany and Gregory Eddi Jones, surveys the state of contemporary black-and-white photography. The project, curated by Efrem Zelony-Mindell, includes the works of intergenerational, interdisciplinary, and intersectional artists, each questioning the perceived order of things. These interrogations center on issues of race, gender, philosophy, and praxis, subverting traditional notions of black-and-white imagery into something feral and queered, possessed of previously unimagined possibilities. These works embody a mastery of what is strengthened or weakened by the light inside them. Beyond our individual differences, there exist universal commonalities in the ways humans try to make sense of the world; as our fluency with visual vocabulary changes, these images change accordingly. Primal Sight has been featured as a collected portfolio of 25 works in DEAR DAVE, Magazine as well as a 26 artist online group show at In the In-Between. About the Author Efrem Zelony-Mindell (they/them) is a curator, writer, and artist. Their curatorial endeavors include the exhibitions: n e w f l e s h, Are You Loathsome, Familiar Strange, This Is Not Here, and more.
