Harlow was unable to finish her story. Her last lines are about a friend of hers who fell to AIDS. And it was that illness which cut short this work, her work. She entrusted those close to her to finish, fully aware that her days were numbered. We put together her notes, tape-recorded and written down. Not a word was crossed out in her chapters, written in a single, incisive outpouring.

Famous women - singers and models such as Madonna and Karen Mulder - and anonymous "beauties" pose in provocative outfits, semi-clad or naked in hotel rooms. Chambre Close and Pourquoi m'as-tu abandonnee are being shown for the first time in large format in the Museum of Art in Frankfurt/Main. For a moment it seems as if we are looking through the eyes of a male voyeur. But when we look closer, it becomes clear that we are witnessing a dialogue between women. Women from completely different backgrounds - from an employee of the electricity company to a black police inspector - pursue their own erotic fantasies in hotel rooms, observed by Bettina Rheims, a photographer whose viewpoint at the decisive moment is most definitely not male. But this is not as obvious as it seems, for in spite of the frankness of the photographs, they need to be studied with a great deal of attention.

Bettina Rheims has a command of this language, which tells of female eroticism and exhibitionism as no one else does.</p>

<p>Dubbed the "poet of Prague," Josef Sudek was one of the most important and celebrated of Czech photographers. Sudek produced his best work during his middle-aged years, having grown up and out of the rules of Modernism and into a style of his own. Whereas his photographs from the 1930s are mainly a reflection of the external world, by the 1940s he was returning to himself, finding his own unique creative path. It was during this period that he made his most famous photograph, a view of the world seen through his studio window, the window ledge doubling as a stage for still life objects--a setup which he repeated to great effect. Not even the pressures of WWII and the difficult postwar years, including the demands of socialist realism in the arts, interrupted the continuity of his oeuvre.</p>
