The Fraenkel Gallery celebrates its 20th anniversary with a special exhibition and corresponding catalogue entitled 20Twenty. Including works by 68 photographers and spanning the history of the medium, this project focuses on masterworks as well as entirely unknown photographs by anonymous practitioners. The artists include Arbus, Brassai, Cornell, Duchamp, Eggleston, Kertesz, LeWitt, Man Ray, Modotti, Rodchenko, Ruscha, Stieglitz, Strand, and Warhol, among many others. Moving backwards, forwards, and sideways through the past 160 years, the works interweave in unexpected ways themes that photographers have addressed since the invention of the medium. Through its concentration on a group of photographs which have propelled, sustained, and re-invented the medium, 20Twenty involves the viewer in photography's intricate past, present, and future.

"The Little Screens" is a revered and influential body of early work by Lee Friedlander, but it has never before been brought together in its entirety. The book's title refers to the television screens housed in motel rooms and other nondescript rooms of anonymous character spread throughout the country during the 1960s. Each screen vividly transmits images of popular culture icons, political figures, or minor celebrities of the times. The environments are iconographic ghost-rooms filled with bland furniture-rooms without personality, rooms that could be, and are, anywhere and everywhere. "The Little Screens" and their environments weave a narrative of a peripatetic photographer moving through the landscape of 1960s America, and the melancholy, yet sometimes comic quality of life lived on the road. They provide a look at the 1960s as so many people saw it: beamed into their televisions and flickering across their living rooms. The book's preface was written by the legendary Walker Evans after he saw the photographs in 1963.  Foreword by Walker Evans. Walker Evans is a legendary American photographer best known for his iconic work for the WPA in the 1930s, as well as his collaboration with writer James Agee on the book "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men", though his career spanned many decades. A major retrospective of his work was organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2000, generating several publications and spawning a new enthusiasm for his work. 34 duotones 9.5 x 9.5 in.

Lee Friedlander: The Little Screens

This major new monograph stands as an important rediscovery of a small but central body of work in the career of one of the world's best known and beloved photographers. The Richard Avedon images presented here, many for the first time, were made in Paris for "Harper's Bazaar" during the 1950s. What is particularly special about this presentation is that the images are being reproduced to the exact scale of the engraver's prints made for Avedon by the master printer Andre Gremola, and are uncropped, on their original mounts, with all of the artist's notations on both front and back. Thus, they provide a remarkable portrait of the working methods of one of the most influential fashion photographers in history. This oversized book, measuring 12 x15 inches, is being printed without compromise with tritone plates throughout, and will be a stunning object in its own right. With this body of work, which includes the photographer's iconographic "Dovima with Elephants, Cirque d'Hiver, 1955", Avedon broke radical new ground in the history of photography. He documented the moment in which postwar France was striving through fashion to reclaim its cultural eminence. This Limited Edition of 100 copies is beautifully slipcased in a custom wooden box. The book is signed and numbered on the colophon page and includes an original Avedon print. The image is of Suzy Parker and Gardner McKay at the Cafa des Beaux Arts, Paris in August 1956 from page 34 of the book. The print is also signed and numbered and comes in a separate envelope within the slipcase that is carefully packed in vellum.

Lee Friedlander: The Little Screens: Special Edition

An intimate friendship of more than three decades is chronicled here, along with the aesthetic evolution of two major American artists. R.B. Kitaj's unusual, handsome, troubled, charismatic face has been a rich subject for Lee Friedlander's camera since the two artists became friends in 1970, when both were teaching at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kitaj begins and ends with photographs shot in Los Angeles, and the artist's passage from raw and vigorous young man to grizzly, white-haired prophet is charted through more than 90 images. A frank and moving series of images from 1994, focused on Kitaj during the days following his wife Sandra's sudden and unexpected death, achieve a disarming intimacy that could only have been the result of a deep and trusting friendship. Kitaj includes a reminiscence by Kitaj himself as well as an introduction by Friedlander's wife, Maria.
