The desert is a place of silence, mystery, and solitude, a setting and vehicle for dreams and myths, and the ultimate site of illusion and mirage. Europe discovered the desert in the nineteenth century via archaeological and geographical explorations. In that period too, photography was invented, and it went hand in hand with the discovery of the desert. Solitary travelers or members of scientific expeditions, artists, and photographers embarked upon the representation of the desert as a territory to explore and as landscape. Organized around a series of historical and contemporary works, this book examines the ways photography and the movies have represented the desert. Among the artists included are Michael Ashkin, Lee Friedlander, Edward Weston, Wilfred Thesiger, Bill Viola, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Herge (of Tintin fame). Celebrates the history and influence of the Fondation Cartier through interviews, exhibition photographs, and documentation of the Jean Nouvel building Distributed on behalf of the Fondation Cartier, Paris In 1984, acting on a suggestion by the artist Ce´sar, Alain Dominique Perrin, then President of Cartier International, decided to set up an arts foundation. Thus the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain was born, and this year it is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. Dedicated to promoting contemporary art and making it accessible to the general public, the Fondation Cartier is a place of artistic creation as well as a crossroads where all spheres of contemporary thought intersect and come together. In 1994, the institution moved from its original location on the Montcel estate in Jouy-en-Josas to a new home of glass and steel in Paris specially designed by Jean Nouvel. Playing with transparency, the architecture of this exceptional edifice seeks, in the words of its architect, “to blur the tangible edges of the building and render the perception of it as a solid mass superfluous in a poetics of indistinctness and evanescence.” For its thirtieth anniversary, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain is publishing a lavishly illustrated book that reflects its unique character and identity, which have become inextricably linked to the building designed by Nouvel. Documents recent work by Bruce Nauman with essays by prominent critics A prolific artist, recognized as one of the most influential of his generation, Bruce Nauman (b. 1941, Fort Wayne, Indiana) has developed an astounding body of work, combining sculpture, video, neon, installation, and performance art, since the late 1960s. Nauman is attached to notions or ideas concerning the body and identity, the function of language, the perception of space, and the participation of spectators. He is also particularly interested in the world of dance―expression through movement. Influenced by his encounter with musician John Cage and choreographer Merce Cunningham, he began producing in 1967 a series of filmed performances in which banal, everyday gestures or simple phrases are repeated methodically. In the 1970s and 1980s, he used neon in his works, playing with words or representing sexual scenes. Nauman’s more recent pieces continue to question the ideas or concepts he has explored since the beginning of his career, adding to an exceptionally rich body of work. A never-before-published collection of beautiful, arresting photographs from Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki On the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary in 2014, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain asked the prolific Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki to take a photograph every day to then publish weekly on its website in a slide show. Araki took more than three times that amount from March to May 2014, producing 1,250 color photographs featuring views of Tokyo, portraits of young women, sensual still lifes, and shots taken at restaurants or in a small bar in the district of Kabuki-cho. A book about the creation of EXIT, an 360° installation offering the opportunity to visuallyunderstand the complex relationships between the economic, political andenvironmental factors underpinning contemporary human migrations. Based on an idea by French philosopher and urbanist Paul Virilio, the video installation EXIT was created by the New York-based architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro and premiered at Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris in 2008. Composed of a series of animated maps generated by data, this immersive installation investigated human migrations today and their leading causes, including the impact of climate change. Through six scenarios, this book, which was specially created to explain the exhibition, provides a rare opportunity to visually understand the complex relation- ships between the various economic, political, and environmental factors underpinning contemporary human migrations.
