Why study the Old Testament? More people accept the Old Testament than all other religious writings combined. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all find their beginnings in the Old Testament. We should study it for at least two reasons. First, our Father in heaven has not changed (James 1:17). The God of the New Testament is exactly the same as He was in the Old Testament. He has always been, and will always be, the holy God of justice and love. Second, the Old Testament gives the background to understand the New. For example, John the Baptist calls Jesus "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). The Old Testament enables us to understand this. In all, the New Testament refers to the Old more than 600 times! Digging into this study, you will meet interesting people like Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and his 12 sons, Moses, Joshua, and Ruth. We will introduce you to 20 kings of Israel, 20 kings of Judah, and 16 prophets. You will learn the books of the Old Testament through a song and a house-drawing. You will discover that from Eden to Calvary to your home, God's greatest desire has always been to fellowship with people. From Moses to Malachi you will see prophecies of Jesus the Messiah who came to bring us back to the Father.

Two Jewish brothers—Caiaphas and Caleb—born in Jerusalem They both were dedicated as babies in the temple and grew up studying in the synagogue. They became Jewish priests in Jerusalem, married, and began to raise their children. Then one day in the temple, Jesus healed Caleb’s blind son. Caleb and his family became followers of Jesus. But Caiaphas was among those priests who rejected Jesus. As time passed, Caiaphas became his brother’s worst enemy! Neither Caleb nor any follower of Jesus was allowed to enter the temple. Years passed and tension increased. Then came the stoning of Stephen. Persecution became so hot that Caleb, and most other believers, fled from Jerusalem. The Sanhedrin seized their property—­and sold their homes and lands. For the next 20 years, Caleb and his family moved. They lacked the money to buy land or a home. Wherever they went, Jews who rejected Jesus persecuted him. Rich employers often stole all or part of his wages. Many times he was insulted, beaten, cheated, and even put in prison. Church leaders encouraged him not to be bitter. But Caleb was now 60. He was old, tired, and poor. He had been patient for 30 years. It was hard for his children to find work. Meanwhile, Caiaphas was wealthy, respected, and comfortable in Jerusalem. Perhaps it was time for Caleb to go home, to remove the sword, and be at peace with Jewish sisters and brothers. Caleb’s heart missed the memories of his childhood—the worship in the temple, the Scripture readings in the synagogue, the feasts, and the fellowship. Should he die and be buried, a poor man away from his roots? Or should he return to Jerusalem and Judaism, the faith of his parents and family? Hebrews was written to believers like Caleb. It emphasizes that Jesus is superior to prophets, angels, Moses, Joshua, and Levites. Jesus is a superior High Priest who brings us a superior covenant, which includes a better tabernacle, ministry, and sacrifice.

Like a two-edged sword, Scripture can help or harm. We believe that all Scripture is breathed by God-given to help us find our way (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Ps. 119:105). Who should take a course on Homiletics? Homiletics is the study of preparing and preaching biblical messages. For sure, all pastors, evangelists, and missionaries should study Homiletics. Sometimes we think that the only preachers are ministers who stand behind pulpits. But Acts 8:1-4 states that all the believers "who had been scattered" from Jerusalem "preached the word wherever they went." So all believers may preach or declare the Word of God. In secondary school and college, many students study how to prepare a speech. Likewise, in the church, many laymen should learn to prepare a biblical message. God opens doors for those who prepare. Many laymen preach the Word in prisons, schools, homes, churches, and other places. This is a "how-to-do-it" course. We will teach you to prepare and preach biblical messages with the Five-Step Method. One great teacher taught Homiletics for more than 40 years. He said the Five-Step Method was the easiest, yet most powerful method he had ever seen for planning a sermon. The Five Steps are: The Introduction, The Problem, The Solution, The Result, and The Invitation. We will teach you how to create each of these parts of a sermon. And we will teach you how to find, file, and use illustrations so people will pay attention, enjoy, and accept your messages. Above all, we will emphasize the importance of the preacher himself-his character, message, delivery, and anointing. The person is always more important than the method. People's lives are changed when the Holy Spirit anoints a godly person to preach a biblical message.

A pastor must make a passing grade in the way he relates to workers, lay leaders, volunteers, and deacons. Otherwise, he will fail in ministry. A pastor must also learn to relate well to his work. Many who begin well in pastoral ministry drop out of the race after a few years. Some fail because they care too much for others, and too little for their own needs. Others develop a root of bitterness that grows into a tree with deadly fruit. And there are always those who stumble over their own pride or selfish desires. In these final chapters a prophet from God will guide you to a long, fruitful ministry. So pay attention!
