<p>La odisea de Xabiertxo: el último paquebote Ésta es la historia real de un grupo de refugiados, cuarenta y tres personas, la mayoría de ellas vascas, que el azar reunió en el Groix, el último paquebote que zarpó de Burdeos destino a Buenos Aires el 12 de junio de 1940, pocos días antes de la caída de Francia. Un viaje previsto de quince días se convirtió en una odisea de siete meses, repleta de situaciones adversas, desde el torpedeamiento por parte de submarinos alemanes en alta mar, hasta la retención en el puerto de Casablanca, escenario real, avant la lettre, del drama narrado en el clásico del cine en blanco y negro de Michael Curtiz. El libro nos permite conocer las gestiones y las relaciones políticas que se desarrollaron para que la expedición llegara a destino. Y el papel fundamental de los Decretos Pro-Inmigración Vasca del Presidente Ortiz que autorizaba -en plena II Guerra Mundial- el ingreso en la República Argentina de vascos “sin distinción de origen y lugar de residencia, bajo la sola garantía moral y material en cada caso, del Comité Pro-Inmigración Vasca”. El libro registra también el viaje de ida y vuelta de Xabiertxo, un icono de los libros impresos en lengua vasca en el siglo XX, y a través de éste, la labor que en pro de la cultura vasca realizó el colectivo humano de la diáspora vasca en América que, en palabras de Andrés Irujo, a través de instituciones como la propia Editorial Ekin en el exilio de Buenos Aires, se convirtió en el cordón umbilical de los vascos del interior.</p>
