This book describes the experimental study of evolution and adaptation, carried out by means of combined field-work and laboratory genetics. That technique has been developed during the last forty years or so by my colleagues and myself, and by a small but increasing number of geneticists throughout the world. In discussing what has been achieved by these means many relevant pieces of work familiar to me have been omitted, while doubtless there are others that have escaped my attention. To those who have thus laboured without recognition here, I offer my apologies. Yet I would not include further examples were I writing again, and this for two reasons. First, my aim is not to produce a com pendium in the German fashion, for I have endeavoured to develop principles with enough instances to illustrate them but no more. Secondly, this book is in danger of becoming too long as it is: one which is in general consulted only in libraries, not read familiarly by students.

Surface mount technology (SMT) is a mature technology. SMT allows placement of more surface mount components (SMC) into smaller and tighter printed circuit board (PCB) areas. This increased density means increased performance and power in smaller packaging systems, and allows manufacturing of smaller and higher performance products at lower cost. The advance of integrated circuit (IC) technology and the requirements of high density for high-speed circuity is driving the design of SM C to higher pin count and smaller package size. In general, the higher pin count and smaller package size are accomplished by reducing the bond pad size and spacing (pitch) on the chip level and the lead/pin/solder dimensions and pitch on the chip carrier (module) level. The last few years have witnessed an explosive growth in the research and development efforts devoted to FPT as a direct result of the rapid growth of SMT and miniaturization. Some examples are: hand held lightweight video recorders that can take sharp pictures, hand held lightweight devices that can track the worldwide package movements, and portable computers with tiny yet powerful microprocessors and large memory capability that can fit into a briefcase or into the palm of your hand.

Although many people may want to know how plastics bum, the question of how plastics bum is only a part of a much larger question: "How does anything bum?" To examine the burning process of plastics in isolation does not make any sense and may lend credence to the idea that plastics are a special material with a special hazard. An analogy would be to study how "carbonless" carbon paper bums and then to relate the burning characteristics and combustion products of this single type of paper to all other types of paper, and even to other wood products and to wood itself. The testing of one type of product from a very large family of products that are physically similar, and the relation of these test results to all other members of that family, has no basis in the scientific method. Those who do so are ignorant of science-unless they have some hidden reason for wanting to ascribe certain properties to all related materials.
