The `unexplored mansion', adjoining the Little Palace at Knossos was discovered by Arthur Evans but left undug. It was eventually excavated by Popham between 1967 and 1973. The mansion and its contents date from 1550 to 1200 BC-most of the finds belong to Late Minoan II, around 1425 BC, when the building was severely damaged by fire. They include over 200 decorated vases, a full range of storage and kitchen pots, bronze and stone vessels and tools, sealstones, religious figurines, and clay crucibles for bronze working. As the largest collection of objects of this period they contribute greatly to our understanding of this crucial stage in the island's history, when it had fallen under the domination of Mycenaean Greece.

Final publication of excavations started by Alan Wace between 1950 and 1955 and finished by Nicolas Verdis between 1957 and 1963. The houses, lying outside the citadel walls to the south-west of the Tomb of Clytemnestra, contained 22,000 ivories as well as the first Linear B tablets found at Mycenae. Finds of all categories, the excavation and architecture are all published here. The function of the houses and their role in the 13th century BC bureacracy is assessed. The microfiche contain detailed catalogues of all the material and scientific analyses of the stirrup jars.

For five and a half centuries amphorae were used by the ancient  Greeks to transport olive oil, wine and other liquid and  semi-liquid products. The analysis of this distinctive pot form  now provides our main source of information on the lost organic  staples of the classical economy. Undiagnostic fragmentary amphorae remains  are often the most common ceramic find during excavations in the  Mediterranean, and until now a methodology has been lacking for  their effective study. Traditionally chronological and regional types  have been established by stylistic analysis and the incomplete evidence of  administrative stamps. In this book Whitbread surveys this methodology  but compares it with the results of his own extensive work on the  ceramic petrology of Greek amphorae. His pioneering approach not  only reveals new information about Greek trade but also sheds  fascinating light on the production of these commonly found  vessels.
