Ages 5 through 10. Use the short stories and thinking activities in this book to help children develop functional problem-solving skills and effective strategies for communicating when problems are encountered in various situations. The activities help students to verbalize solutions for problems, identify causes, identify consequences of behavior, and recognize the viewpoints of others. Reproducible worksheets are included. 
Part 1 of this book includes three types of activities that can be used to develop problem-solving skills. • Activity A - Each of the stories in Activity A includes a picture and a short story in which a problem situation is described. The reproducible answer forms contain questions related to the problems presented in each story. • Activity B - After the student has listened to or read the story, ask him/her to place the pictures in the correct story sequence. Then child also creates an ending for the story by solving a problem. • Activity C - The stories in Activity C require students to react to problems experienced by a character named Ryan during the course of a day. In Part 2, problems presented in short poems are discussed. Students respond to questions related to the problems described. Pictures are included for each activity.
In Part 3, brief descriptions of problems are presented and the child responds to questions about these problems. The following skills are emphasized:

Ages 4 through 10. The pragmatic activities in Lets Share Our Feelings are designed to help children develop a better understanding of their own feelings and the feelings of others so that they can communicate more effectively in various social situations. After listening to short stories, children react to the actions and feelings of the story characters. Children can then discuss their own feelings as they relate to the types of problems presented in the stories. Joy, anger, frustration, disappointment, fear, jealousy, and other emotions are conveyed in the story contexts. The book is organized into three sections: • Stories About Feelings. This section includes short stories in which the story characters experience a variety of emotions. The stories can be read by the teacher or by the student. Each story is accompanied by an illustration. Questions are asked related to the feelings of the story characters. Students are also asked to talk about their own feelings when similar situations are encountered.  • Feeling Comparison Worksheets. The individual worksheets in this section are designed to promote the understanding of specific concepts related to the expression of feelings. Students are given practice in classification, matching, and the descriptive uses of language.  • Drawing Feelings. This section includes drawing activities related to feelings. Students, for example, are asked to draw pictures showing specific feelings, situations that evoke these feelings, etc.  This is an excellent resource for children with language disorders, learning disabilities, behavior problems and other students who have difficulty using language to convey their feelings effectively.

Ages 9 and up. This book includes reproducible pictures and worksheets that can be used to promote both the understanding and the effective use of idioms when speaking in English. Over 200 idioms are included. The book is divided into two sections:   • Idiom Worksheets. Idiomatic expressions are presented within the context of a short story. Each story targets five idioms. The story can be read by the teacher or student. After presenting the short story, discuss the meaning of the idioms and give examples showing how they are used. The worksheet activities provide practice using idioms in sentences. Students are also asked to create stories using the idioms.   • Idiom Task Cards. This section includes reproducible task cards that can be incorporated into classroom game activities. A situation is described on each card and the child's task is to identify the appropriate idiom from those listed. Large, humorous illustrations are included for some of the idioms included in the stories. These pictures can be used to generate discussions about the meaning of these expressions. The pragmatic language activities in this book are designed to help students use language effectively when faced with difficult situations. Issues relating to the feelings of individuals with disabilities are presented in some of the activities to increase students' sensitivity to the needs of these individuals. Each of the 72 short stories in the second edition is presented on a reproducible worksheet.  The book is divided into two sections:  • Activities for Functional Communication Development. The activities in this section are designed to facilitate the development of effective strategies for social interaction. The lessons provide students with opportunities to practice using language to give explanations, to express disagreement, to show disappointment, and for various other purposes. Role-playing situations are included.  • Stories for Problem-Solving and Communication Practice. This section includes 72 short stories that may be read by the student or presented orally by the instructor. The questions that follow the stories require students to react to the situations described and to offer solutions. The stories provide meaningful contexts for the discussion of strategies for using language to solve problems that occur during everyday social interactions. Problem-solving topics are included related to issues such as dealing with social rejection, expressing disapproval, sharing criticism, and taking an appropriate course of action. Ages 4 through 8. The revised edition of this popular book includes new pictures, worksheets, games, and activities to teach the concepts most often used in classroom directions. Concepts emphasized include on/under, forward/backward, above/below, through/around, whole/half, together/separated, wide/narrow, same/different, more/less, inside/outside, top/bottom, near/far, in front/behind, and many others.
