In northern Door County, Wisconsin, there is a tiny village that has maintained its original beauty since its first settlement in the 1860s: Sister Bay. The second largest community on the peninsula, Sister Bay’s is explored by author Joseph W. Zurawski using over 200 vivid images depicting the village’s early days. There were several attempts to establish a farming community in the region in the late 19th century, however, the genesis of a permanent settlement can be traced to an influential businessman, Andre Roeser. Roeser’s large personal residence served as the area’s hotel and gathering place for social as well as spiritual services, and in time he established a commercial pier, sawmill, lumberyard, icehouse, and tugboat service. Incorporation came in 1912, when several other businesses were already thriving and a large hotel and resort attracted hundreds of visitors each year. This trend has continued over the years and today visitors outnumber residents by ten to one on an average summer weekend.

Kewaunee County became well known throughout the country even before Wisconsin became a territory. The word that gold had been discovered in Kewaunee spread quickly, and plans were soon underway that mapped out the future metropolis of the area. Unfortunately for fortune hunters, "fool's gold" was all that was to be found in Kewaunee. That, and a landscape of breathtaking beauty.Incorporated in 1852, Kewaunee County became home to a large influx of settlers. From the New England states to as far away as Germany, Poland, Ireland, and Bohemia, pioneers flocked to Kewaunee, increasing the population from 1,109 in 1855 to 14,405 in 1875. The European cultural influence is still apparent in the community today. These families came seeking farmland, industrial work, and the natural resources that Kewaunee had to offer. The lumber business boomed and the farmers prospered. Today, the scenery and Lake Michigan attract thousands of sportsmen and vacationers, with expansive beaches, a boardwalk, and fishing tournaments.

Sturgeon Bay has been home to ship builders, both large and small, since the 1830s. In that decade, Amos Lovejoy built the first documented vessel, but it was not until Freeland B. Gardner arrived from Chicago in 1854, that the enterprise for which the area is well known truly took root. ÝÝSturgeon Bay Shipbuilding includes images from the histories of such major ship builders as Leatham B. Smith, Peterson Builders, Palmer Johnson, Christy Corporation and Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding, all of which played an instrumental role in the development of the industry. Showcased here are images from the earliest years, when ships like the Halsted and Lake Forest, were battered by the elements. World War II era photographs include a subchaser as she passes through the lift bridge, a longtime landmark.

Door County is truly one of the treasures of Wisconsin, attracting millions of visitors with its beauty, peacefulness, and small-town atmosphere. This area did not always thrive on tourism, however, and various industries have always played an important part in its history. Ships and shipbuilding have been very important in Door County, and many ships have been lost in Death's Door at the northern tip of the Door Peninsula. Farmers moved into Door County, and many achieved prosperity. Today, many farmers have given up their trade to become a part of the summer resort industry, which is the dominant economy, attracting some two million vacationers and visitors annually.
