Bernhard Zeller depicts Herman Hesse's ancestry and childhood, spent in the small German town where Hesse was born in 1877, and traces his adolescence and early manhood. He describes his relationship with his first wife, his emigration to Switzerland in protest against German militarism, his Jungian psychoanalysis, the visit to India which inspired his narrative masterpieces Siddhartha and Journey to the East, and the breakup of his marriage. Hesse's growing Iiterary reputation coincided with his brief second marriage, and with his peaceful later years in Montagnola spent in the company of his third wife, Ninon, whom he married in 1931. His stature was not fully recognized outside German-speaking countries until after his death in 1962. Zeller also recalls Hesse's circle of friends, including his famous contemporaries such as Thomas Mann and Andre Gide. This valuable documentary portrait is illustrated with photographs from Hermann Hesse's private collection. In addition, it includes a bibliography and chronology.

This book explores social cohesion in rural settlements in western Europe from 700-1050, asking to what extent settlements, or districts, constituted units of social organisation. It focuses on the interactions, interconnections and networks of people who lived side by side - neighbours. Drawing evidence from most of the current western European countries, the book plots and interrogates the very different practices of this wide range of regions in a systematically comparative framework. It considers the variety of local responses to the supra-local agents of landlords and rulers and the impact, such as it was, of those agents on the small-scale residential group. It also assesses the impact on local societies of the values, instructions and demands of the wider literate world of Christianity, as delivered by local priests.

Dass jedes Volk seine Sprache hat, scheint aus dem Blickwinkel unserer Kultur zunachst selbstverstandlich. Seit der Antike gilt Sprache als ein, ja zuweilen als das Definitionsmerkmal des Volkes. Der moderne Nationalismus ging noch weiter und hat in der Sprache den Ausdruck der innersten 'Seele' eines Volkes gesehen; oft wurde davon ein politischer Auftrag abgeleitet. Gerade die Geschichte des Fruhmittelalters gibt gute Voraussetzungen, das Verhaltnis zwischen Sprache und ethnischer Identitat uber lange Dauer hinweg zu verfolgen. In der Epoche zwischen etwa 400 und 1000 werden in Europa sowohl eine Vielzahl neuer Volker und Staaten als auch zahlreiche neue Sprachen greifbar. Doch wie sollen 'Volker' und 'Sprachen' methodisch abgegrenzt werden? Was macht eine ethnische Gruppe zu einem eigenen Volk, und wodurch wird ein Dialekt innerhalb eines Sprachkontinuums zu einer distinkten Sprache? Wann wird etwa aus dem Lateinischen das Altfranzosische? Sind sprachliche Gemeinsamkeiten bzw. Unterschiede markant genug gewesen, um Distanz- wie Zusammengehorigkeitsbewusstsein zu begrunden? Muss eine identitatswirksame Sprache zugleich die Umgangssprache sein? Welche Auswirkungen hatte Mehrsprachigkeit auf das Identitatsbewusstsein? Diesen und ahnlichen Fragestellungen gingen HistorikerInnen und PhilologInnen im Rahmen der internationalen Tagung 'Sprache und Identitat' 2009 in Wien nach. Fur das Fruhmittelalter wurden sie bisher noch nie in derart breitem Vergleich erortert. Deshalb bietet der vorliegende Tagungsband, der im Rahmen des Wittgenstein-Preis-Projektes "Ethnische Identitaten im fruhmittelalterlichen Europa" entstanden ist, einen einzigartigen Uberblick; seine Ergebnisse sind weit uber die behandelte Epoche hinaus von Interesse.
