A fascinating look at the relationship between papermaking and the art of watercolor At the Royal Academy exhibition of 1794, Paul Sandby (1725–1809) exhibited his newly painted A View of Vinters at Boxley, Kent, with Mr. Whatman’s Turkey Paper Mills. Sandby, one of the founding members of the Royal Academy and one of the preeminent British landscape painters of the day, included the celebrated Whatman papermaking mill at the center of this landscape composition. James Whatman I and his son James Whatman II were the most famous English papermakers of the eighteenth century, and by 1760 Turkey Mill was the largest paper mill in the country. This handsome and engaging book looks at how the View of Vinters and Turkey Mill is both a superb example of Sandby’s art and an important document of the rise of industry in the British countryside and of the intertwined developments of papermaking and the art of painting in watercolor. It also features other watercolors by Sandby and materials relating to the processes of papermaking and to the Whatman family and its mill.

Born in Birmingham, England, in 1783, David Cox was destined to become a major figure in the linked worlds of landscape painting and watercolor painting in the first half of the nineteenth century. Remarkably, no significant study of the artist has been undertaken in more than a century. This beautifully illustrated volume focuses much-needed attention on Cox, filling in the details of his biography and illuminating his contributions to British landscape painting. Cox's widely-known Sun, Wind, and Rain, painted in 1845, is emblematic of his concern with the representation of light and atmosphere and weather. He was unparalleled in his ability to capture the effects of wind and weather. Scott Wilcox’s chapter in this book investigates Cox’s artistic identity and his legacy. Bruce Davidson (b. 1933) and Paul Caponigro (b. 1932) are two of the greatest American photographers of their generation. Working in different traditions, and exhibiting fundamentally distinct approaches, they are both brilliant observers whose art inspires and provokes. This book, the first to pair the two, examines the work they produced during visits to Britain and Ireland in the 1960s and 1970s. The gritty sensibility that made Bruce Davidson’s series Brooklyn Gang such a sensation was unmistakable as he trained his camera on the gamut of British society, travelling from London to Scotland and later to the mining region of Wales. Paul Caponigro, steeped in a formalist black-and-white landscape tradition, made expressive portraits of prehistoric stone circles, dolmens, and ancient Irish churches in the landscape. Through all the changes of style and technique and all the debates over the appropriate use of the medium, it was watercolor's ability to convey the timeless truth and reality of the natural world that mattered to artists, critics, and audiences. British watercolors of the Victorian period continued to observe an essential humility before nature; they remain fresh and compellingly immediate because they derived in the first place from the artists' heartfelt communion with the elements of nature.Victorian Landscape Watercolors begins with a consideration of the continuing influence of the great generation who earlier in the century, during the extraordinary parallel rise of watercolor and landscape painting, had established the landscape watercolor as a major British contribution to the arts. The second chapter examines the role of the landscape watercolor in the aesthetic thought of John Ruskin, whose critical voice played a dominant role in shaping that art. The third chapter looks at the place of landscape within the watercolor societies and its development as it appeared in their annual exhibitions.
