As early as 1709, Vanbrugh wrote of his ambition to preserve some ruins at Blenheim so as to recall 'One of the Most Agreeable Objects that the best of Landskip Painters can invent.' This pictorial attitude to art and nature soon gathered force, and until about 1830 English poets, painters, travelers, gardeners, architects, connoisseurs and dilettanti were broadly united by the emphasis they placed on picturesque vision. The principal qualities of the Picturesque - variety, movement, irregularity, intricacy, roughness and sense of place - became deeply embedded in the English sensibility, providing the distinctive characteristics of English vision for the last two centuries. They found their most celebrated and enduring form in architecture, landscape and garden design.The English Vision is the first major study of the Picturesque since Christopher Hussey's book on the subject was published in1927. By treating the Picturesque as a way of looking as well as a movement, David Watkin is able to emphasize how deeply it coloured the practice of architecture throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian eras.The book contains chapters on the early landscape gardens, such as those at Chiswick House, Stowe and Rousham; on the Rococo and Chinoiserie phase of gardening; on the fashion for ruins and follies; on the theory and practice of garden design from Capability Brown to Payne Knight; on the influence of the Picturesque in Europe; and on the history of village design and town-planning, culminating in the garden city.  At the heart of the book lies a long section on the Picturesque House, composed of two chapters: Vanbrugh to Soane, and Salvin to Lutyens (by way of Devey, Norman Shaw and the Arts and Crafts Movement).It contains more than 150 B&W illustrations.

An editorial in Apollo, entitled "The Time Bomb," claimed that "it deserved to become a set book in art school and University art history departments," and the Times Literary Supplement savaged it as an example of "that kind of vindictiveness of which only Christians seem capable."Here, for the first time, is the story of the book's impact. In writing his groundbreaking polemic, David Watkin had taken on the entire modernist establishment, tracing it back to Pugin, Viollet-le-Duc, Corbusier, and others who claimed that their chosen style had to be truthful and rational, reflecting society's needs. Buildings are the most tangible and evocative products of human societies and human aspirations, yet architectural history is a comparatively new discipline - if it is really a discipline at all, taught though it is in several universities. Writing about architecture was very much the province of architects until the 1930s, when the gentlemanly English amateur tradition was supplanted by rigorous German academic principles of art history at the Courtauld and Warburg Institutes, very much as a result of political events in Europe. It may well be significant that of our three knights of architectural writing, Sir Nikolaus Pevsner was a German academic exile from Nazism, Sir John Summerson was originally an architect and an architectural journalist, while Sir John Betjeman is not really an historian at all but a poet and an English amateur in the best sense. All three have in very different ways greatly illuminated the extraordinary architectural heritage of this country for subsequent generations. This book is the first general historiography of architecture attempted and its publication may mark the maturity of the subject as a serious branch of historical research.
