Since its invention, photography has been used to document and interpret the landscape. Survey photographers in the 1860s were the first environmental advocates, arguing for the U.S. national park system. During the first half of the twentieth century photographers Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were central figures in influencing American attitudes toward wilderness and conservation. This book traces the development of environmental photography beginning with Adams, Porter, and others, and the next generation of landscape photographers―Robert Adams, Richard Misrach, Robert Glenn Ketchum, Patrick Nagatani, and Mark Klett―whose works confronted the issues of landscape and the environment in less idealized terms. Shifting from the historical framework, the book presents new work by twenty-three photographers working in the United States, the next wave of artists using the camera to engage the environmental issues of the day. Works by Michael Berman, Subhankar Banerjee, Joann Brennan, Dornith Doherty, Greg Mac Gregor, Christina Seely, Sharon Stewart, and others are among the ninety-one black-and-white and color images presented, many being published for the first time. Ranging from documentary to conceptual, the photographs touch on topics such as land and water use, the human place in the landscape, mounting consumer waste, industrial pollution, roof gardens and the green roof initiative, local food production, energy consumption, and the effects of industry on humans and animals. Katherine Ware's text offers insightful commentary on photography and the ways that environmental issues have been framed and advanced through the medium of photography. This is a powerful commentary on global environmental issues as seen through the lens of the newest wave of environmental photographers.

Hungarian born Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) was influential not only as a photographer but also as a filmmaker, teacher, and painter. He taught at the Bauhaus in Germany and, after fleeing the Nazi regime, settled in Chicago, where he founded the Institute of Design. He pioneered the photomontage and created the camera-less medium of the "photogram." This book, the second in the Getty's In Focus series, features sixty reproductions from the Getty's outstanding collection of this important photographer's work--each described by Katherine Ware of the Museum's department of photographs. The book also includes the edited transcript of a recent colloquium that provides the historical and critical perspective necessary for understanding Moholy-Nagy's vital contribution to twentieth-century art. The colloquium participants were Charles Hagan, Thomas Barrow, Jeannine Fiedler, Leland Rice, Hattula Moholy-Nagy, and Weston Naef and Katherine Ware.

During a career that spanned more than fifty years, two continents, and work in many media, Man Ray (1890-1976) produced a large body of photographic images that continue to command our attention. This volume presents his early work in New York in the 1910s, selections from his sizeable Paris oeuvre in the 20s, 30s, and 50s, and photographs taken during his time in Hollywood in the 40s. Though in later years he expressed a desire to be remembered as a painter, Man Ray continued to work with photography throughout his life, pushing the boundaries of the medium with cameraless images, solarized portraits, and other innovations. The Getty Museum's collection of three hundred works by Man Ray includes vintage prints from the 1910s through the 1960s. This volume presents more than fifty photographs, with commentary on each image by Katherine Ware, assistant curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The volume also includes an overview of his life and the edited transcript of a symposium on his career.

History & Criticism

The photographs of Chris McCaw (born 1971) are produced with various hand-built view cameras as big as 30 by 40 inches, which are equipped with large aerial lenses designed to allow a maximum amount of light to pass through. Using large paper negatives, McCaw makes very long exposures ranging from several hours to a full day, which result in solarized final images. Besides the attractive neo-primitive qualities of his landscape imagery, the concentrated sunlight passing through the large optical elements actually scorches an etched path across the surface of the paper, rending open the charred skies to hint at a brighter light behind our sun. Sunburn brings together more than 60 of these landscapes, cooked visions in which blackened suns move stroboscopically through veiled skies that hang like curtains over vistas reduced to shadow. The violent shearing or destruction of each image contests the traditionally mellow aesthetic of the landscape photography tradition, and the marks left behind are a physical testament to the power of the sun, which is both subject and collaborator in this chance meeting of creator and destroyer. The excitement of discovering such a remarkable and untapped property of these particular lenses and expired gelatin silver papers is a testament to McCaw’s openness to the photographic process, and his continued experimentation over the past eight years has created an equally indelible mark on the tradition of landscape photography.
