Fue uno de esos momentos en que el progreso de algo grande –en este caso, el arte de Italia– presionó fuertemente sobre la felicidad de un individuo, a través de cuya desesperanza y merma, la humanidad, en personas más afortunadas, da un paso más próximo a su éxito final. 
Debajo del alegre exterior del artesano bien pagado, que busca prendedores para la capa de Santa María Novella o que tuerce las láminas de metal para las tumbas de los Médici, se encuentra el deseo ambicioso de expandir el destino del arte italiano para un conocimiento mayor y para una profundización de las cosas. Un propósito en el arte que no difiere del propósito aún inconsciente de Leonardo; y a menudo, en el modelado de la vestimenta, o de un brazo levantándose, o del cabello peinado hacia atrás, le llegaba algo de la libertad y la riqueza de una edad posterior.
