This is a history of the Huns in Europe from their first attacks on the Goths north of the Black Sea to the collapse of their central European empire after the death of the legendary Attila. In the only connected narrative account of the rise and fall of the Huns in English, Professor Thompson reconstructs their campaigns in detail from disparate and often fragmentary sources. In the process, there emerges a clear picture of their dramatic successes, and failures, against the non-Roman peoples of central and eastern Europe, and of their many invasions of the eastern and western halves of the Roman Empire.

Ulfila was a fourth-century Christian bishop and missionary who first brought Christianity to the Goths. He is credited with having created the Gothic alphabet, and he wrote the earliest translation of the Bible into a Germanic language. In this classic and still valuable short study of early Christianity among the Goths, E.A. Thompson first described the background to the Visigoths' conversion from paganism, discussing their material culture, relations with the Roman Empire, social organization and religion. He went on to detail the conversion and its aftermath and to assess Ulfila's achievement in the earliest history of Christianity among the Germanic people. This second edition includes a new Foreword with additional bibliography by Michael Kulikowski, University of Tenessee, and an additional Appendix: 'The Life of St Saba', translated and annotated by John Matthews, Yale University.

The Life of St Germanus, by Constantius of Lyon, is a contemporary account of a fifth-century bishop of Auxerre, who on two occasions came to Britain. Professor E.A. Thompson tries to extract as much information as possible from the Dlifeabout the religious situation in Britain at the time of Germanus' visits, and the government, the circumstances of the famous `Hallelujah Victory', the revolt of Armorica, and so on. He attempts to settle the vexed question of the date of Germanus' death, and he studies the qualities of Constantius himself. The book ends with a description of what may have happened in eastern Britain in the years following Germanus's second visit, a description which challenges many currently held assumptions.

Everyone knows of St Patrick, but what do we know about him? Simply that it was he who `converted the Irish to Christianity'. The strange fact is that for two hundred years or so after his death, although his name was remembered with respect, everything else about him was forgotten. E.A. Thompson pieces together the story of his life, drawing his evidence from the only real clues that exist, Patrick's own writings, not from the later Lives. He reveals him as coming from a well-to-do nominally Christian family in Britain, being captured by Irish raiders and forced into slavery in Co Mayo, converting to a most earnest Christianity, and eventually escaping from Ireland to the fulfillment of his calling. As a bishop, he is shown to have been a man of profound originality, and his writings - his Confession and his Letter to Coroticus - further display his character. It is no surprise that a host of legends became attached to his name, and the biography is completed with a look at some of those early legends.
