For the first time since Pierpont Morgan purchased his first richly illuminated manuscript in 1899 - an Indian Ragamala - this part of the collection has been catalogued. Included are the late thirteenth-century Manafi-i hayavan of Ibn Bakhtishu, regarded by Richard Ettinghausen as one of the ten greatest Persian manuscripts, and several albums with fifty-seven miniatures that once belonged to Sir Charles Hercules Read. The Islamic and Indian holdings comprise over one thousand miniature paintings from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries and nearly two hundred Quran leaves from the ninth to the eleventh centuries. Many of these manuscripts and paintings - all of which are fully described - are reproduced here for the first time. Consisting of six sections: Persian, Turkish, Arabic, Albums, Provincial Mughal, and Indian, this catalogue contains numerous indices, including an iconographic index of miniatures.

Throughout history, people have assembled albums that record their lives and the world around them. Among the most remarkable of all albums ever created are those made in the years 1600-1657 for the emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The Mughal dynasty ruled India for more than three centuries, but the period of greatest artistic production was that of these two great emperors, and the albums of paintings and calligraphy (called muraqqa' in Persian), that they assembled now serve as a window to understanding the history and culture of this important period of Indian history. The paintings in the albums include formal (often symbolic) portraits of the emperors themselves, depictions of members of the royal family in relaxed private settings, portraits of courtiers, Sufi saints and mystics, genre scenes, and natural history subjects. Murder, Mayhem, Pillage, and Plunder: The History of the Lebanon in the 18th and 19th Centuries by Mikhāyil Mishāqa (1800-1873) (English and Arabic Edition)

The author's analysis of the internecine strife and fierce clan rivalry rampant in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries puts into perspective the turmoil into which the Lebanon has fallen today. This translation comprises the memoirs of several generations of the Mishaqa family. The author, Mikhayil Mishaqa (1800-1888), a many-faceted individual, was raised in Dayr al-Qamar, then the princely seat of Mount Lebanon, apprenticed as a merchant in Damietta, Egypt. He served as financial comptroller to the Shihab emirs of Hasbayya and in his later years was a physician and consul to the United States in Damascus. Mishaqa gives a vivid picture of life and history during the period. From his position he was privy to political deliberations and knew intimately the clan chiefs, pashas and princes who were the principal agents of change. The book contains information unavailable elsewhere of importance to political and social historians, on life during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Large portions of the original text that are of particular interest for the study of the interaction of the various ethno-religious groups that inhabit the area, were at one time expunged from the printed Arabic version as too sensitive, but are included in this comprehensive English translation.
