This book is about beliefs, language, communication and cognition. It deals with the fundamental issue of the interpretation of the speaker's utterance expressing a belief and reporting on beliefs of other people in the form of oratio obliqua. The main aim of the book is to present a new account of the problem of interpreting utterances expressing beliefs and belief reports in terms of an approach called Default Semantics.

Two viewpoints on pragmatics are of interest to the clinician and researcher: The various types of deficits of pragmatic competence in different neurogenic communication disorders on the one hand, and the use of pragmatic features as a compensatory strategy to supplement impaired linguistic competence on the other. Both are investigated in this volume. For the purpose of the book, "pragmatics" is understood to include not only discourse organization but also any inference from discourse, situational context, general knowledge, affective prosody and any paralinguistic phenomena used to derive an interpretation for any utterance. It therefore includes the use of metaphors, indirect speech acts, jokes, sarcasm, and any nonliteral interpretation.The reader will thus find information on pragmatic deficits subsequent to right hemisphere damage, pragmatic disorders in dementias, deficits in discourse organization in right and left hemisphere damaged patients, as well as on the use of pragmatic features by fluent and nonfluent aphasic patients. These studies represent original research by members of the IALP Aphasia Committee and their colleagues carried out over the past two years specifically for this publication. This is the third in a series of books commissioned by the International Association for Logopedics and Phoniatrics and published by Pergamon. It carries over twenty commissioned chapters on original work by leading researchers and investigates both how communication disorders affect pragmatic competence, and how pragmatic features can be used to compensate for impaired linguistic competence.

In this volume, Geurts takes discourse representation theory (DRT), and turns it into a unified account of anaphora and presupposition, which he applies not only to the standard problem cases but also to the interpretation of modal expressions, attitude reports, and proper names. The resulting theory, for all its simplicity, is without doubt the most comprehensive of its kind to date.The central idea underlying Geurts' 'binding theory' of presupposition is that anaphora is just a special case of presupposition projection. But this is only one of the ways in which the concept of presupposition is taken beyond its traditional limits. Geurts shows, furthermore, that presupposition projection is crucially involved in several phenomena that are not usually viewed in presuppositional terms, such as modal subordination, de re readings of attitude reports, and rigid designation.While making his case for DRT and the binding theory, Geurts also presents an incisive analysis of what is probably still the most influential account of presupposition, viz. the satisfaction theory, demonstrating that there are fundamental problems not only with this theory but with the very framework in which it is couched.

The aim of this study is to discover basic principles underlying linguistic figurativeness and to develop a theory that is capable of capturing conventional figurative language (referred to as CFLT, i.e. Conventional Figurative Language Theory). The rich empirical data analysed for this publication include, among other things, idioms, proverbs, lexicalised metaphors, and figurative compounds, drawn from ten standard languages with widely different genetic relationships and/or cultural backgrounds (English, German, Dutch, Swedish, French, Russian, Lithuanian, Greek, Finnish, Japanese) and one Low German dialect.The main topic of this work is the relationship between the figurative meaning of a lexical unit and the mental images that form its conceptual basis. Using a cognitive approach, the study deals with the central question of what types of knowledge are involved in creating motivating links between these two conceptual levels of figurative units. Of all the possible types of knowledge relevant to conventional figurative language, so-called "cultural knowledge" can be shown to be crucial. As a consequence, CFLT has to include elements of cultural semiotics and other culture-related disciplines.
