Después del servicio militar, trabajó trece años en el campo de la investigación nuclear en los Países Bajos, Gran Bretaña y Suecia. Entre los años 1971 y 1983 se dedicó activamente a la política en su país, donde llegó a ser ministro de Economía. Además de un gran número de artículos sobre economía y política, es autor de una novela para adultos y guiones para la televisión.
