Inspired by Canto V of the "Inferno" of Dante's "Divine Comedy", Tchaikovsky initially planned to create an opera on the subject but abandoned the idea in favor the present 25-minute fantasia for orchestra in 1876, fininshing the score on November 17th of that year. Bearing all the hallmarks of the composer's late romantic style, Francesca da Rimini takes full advantage of the powerful orchestral forces employed. The first performance was given on March 9, 1877 in Moscow, with the RMS Orchestra conducted by Nikolay Rubinstein. This is a newly engraved and reserached edition prepared by Howard K. Wolf which was originally issued by E.F. Kalmus in 2012 and is now made available in a convenient size.

Francesca da Rimini, Op.32: Study score

First composed in 1869, Tchaikovsky's popular overture-fantasia was premiered in Moscow on March 16, 1870 with the Russian Musical Society under the baton of Nikolay Rubinstein. The composer expanded the work later that year, which was the first version published (1871, Berlin) and this second version was given in St. Petersburg at that city's branch of the RMS under Eduard Napravnik. Still not quite satisfied, Tchaikovsky revised the work again in 1880, the German publisher issuing the final version the following year. This is the standard version known and heard in concerts worldwide today. Despite this, the final version's first performance wasn't even given in Russia proper, but in Tbilisi, Georgia on March 1, 1886, conducted by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov. The newly engraved study score offered here is a reduced-format reissue of the edition by Howard K. Wolf of the large score first issued by E.F. Kalmus in 2012.

Romeo and Juliet (1880 version), TH 42: Study score

Newly edited and engraved study score for Tchaikovsky's second ballet masterpiece. Includes Preface, Synopsis, and Cast of Characters. This is the complete orchestral score, not a piano reduction, based upon the composer's autograph, the very rare first edition issued by P. Jurgenson, and the score from Tchaikovsky's complete works. This score includes variants not present in the Soviet score. Sleeping Beauty was propelled into the permanent ballet repertoire immediately after the brilliant 1889 premiere by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in St. Petersburg's Maryinsky Theatre. This new, reasonably priced study score that will be invaluable to students, conductors, music lovers and ballet aficionados everywhere.

Sleeping Beauty, Op.66: Study score

Despite his overall misgivings about composing music for exhibitions, Tchaikovsky composed what was to become one of his most popular works between September and November of 1880. The commission was for an Arts and Industry Exhibition to be given in the summer of 1881 to commemorate the Russian victory over the Napoleonic forces in 1812. Because of the murder of Tsar Alexander II in 1881, the exhibition was delayed to the next year and the premiere took place on August 20, 1882 with the orchestra and band conductor by Ippolit Altani. Despite the composer's expressions of disappointment with the work, numerous performances took place starting withing a year of its publication.For this edition Tchaikovsky's manuscript was used as the principal source to correct the changes that have been inserted over the decades in the different publications. The manuscript itself contains errors including many missing accidentals. Where there are sixteenth notes with accidentals much of it is hard to read. Most of the missing accidentals have been supplied by those found doubled in other instruments and were fixed without comment. The brass band parts follow the composer's manuscript and first edition rather than the odd additions which seem to have been inserted into the Schmeling edition issued by Breitkopf und Hartel early in the last century. <ul> <li>IMSLP page</li> <li>Tchaikovsky Research</li> </ul>

Overture 1812, Op.49: Study score

The Slavonic March, more commonly known as March Slave is an orchestral tone poem based on Serbo-Russian themes written by Tchaikovsky for a benefit concert given on November 18, 1876 for assisting victims of the conflict between Serbia and Turkey. It soon has become one of his most beloved works and an wordwide audience favorite. This newly engraved edition by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr. is based on the composer's manuscript correcting numerous errors found in several editions, notably the problematic one issued as part of the 'Complete Works' in the USSR, where the original anthem God Save the Tsar was deliberately replaced with a Glinka melody for political reasons. Marche Slave, Op.31: Study score

Written in September and October of 1880 Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings was completed quickly. While away visiting his sister in Kamenka and he "immediately began to feel cheerful, well and relaxed". This work is perfectly reflctive of warmth and happiness the composer experienced on his Autumn holiday. Though originally intended to be a suite, Tchaikovsky ultimately created a symphony for strings. Because of its sunniness this work soon become a concert favorite among string players and with audiences worldwide. This newly engraved edition by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr. uses the composer's manuscript and the first edition as its primary sources, correcting the many errors and editorial additions that have been added over the years. A beautiful score showcasing one of Tchaikovsky happiest times as the composer intended it. <ul>
