Many of Alfred Sisley's wistful, lyrical landscapes radiate with beauty, originality, and technical brilliance, but his reclusive nature and the uneven quality of his output have made him the least known of the major Impressionists. In this handsome book, an international team of scholars presents a broad-ranging analysis of Sisley and his work. By focusing on sixty-five of his best paintings, the book allows us to appreciate Sisley's contribution to the forging of Impressionism in the 1860s, his mastery of style in the 1870s, his resolution of the problems of technique in the 1880s, and his exploration of the idea of serial painting in the 1890s. The book begins with a biography of Sisley written by Christopher Lloyd. Next Caroline Durand-Ruel Godfroy's discussion of Sisley's relationship with his European dealers and William Johnston's commentary on early American collections of works by Sisley shed light on contemporary attitudes toward his art. Isabelle Cahn then provides a detailed documentary chronology of Sisley's works. The catalogue that follows includes full data on sixty-five of Sisley's paintings. The works are arranged chronologically and are accompanied by introductions by Mary Anne Stevens, Christopher Lloyd, William Johnston, and Sylvie Gache-Patin that review relevant locations, stylistic developments, and critical response to Sisley's art.

At the turn of the last century, academic painters were producing formal works, often with strongly moral overtones, at the same time that a generation of younger artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Kandinsky were exploring revolutionary new methods and ideas. By presenting the range of styles vying for attention at a single point in time, the authors of 1900: Art at the Crossroads challenge the idea of art as a linear progression. The book is the lavish catalog of an exhibition organized by the Royal Academy of London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Its schizophrenic theme is suggested in the title of the first essay, "Art in 1900: Twilight or Dawn?" The material is organized into concepts established by the French Academy two centuries earlier--still life, the nude, landscapes, and history paintings--plus sections with more modern relevance such as cityscapes and bathers. Arranging works by theme rather than by artist or movement allows for some brilliant a classical naked Danae by Carolus-Duran is paired with an abstracted Degas nude; a sentimental study of crippled boys by Bastida with a vicious Munch mother-and-child (both paintings titled Inheritance ). The preoccupations of fin-de-siècle society emerge; several different treatments of Salome with the severed head of John the Baptist, for example, embody male fears of the femme fatale and her threat to bourgeois values. The book ends with a useful 70-page section of artist biographies. 1900 is a beautifully produced and stimulating study of a pivotal point in European art history. --John Stevenson

Through the 1880s the very essence of representation, meaning and process in Western art were profoundly interrogated. Plausible representations of the external world were cast aside in favour of non-naturalism expressed in varying degrees, from modest distortions of reality to pure abstraction. The decades that followed, up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, were a complex, vibrant period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation. Concentrating on this period of great upheaval, this book will explore the constructive dialogue between painting and sculpture, and the influential roles played by three giants of the era, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, across European art as a whole. While acknowledging the centrality of Paris as a cultural capital, it will also uniquely highlight other centres of artistic ferment in Europe, from Brussels and Barcelona to Berlin and Vienna, and track the variety of routes into modernism in the early twentieth century. This fully illustrated catalogue will contain four essays, introductions to each city of ferment and biographies of the artists. She has published on the history of art andculture from the eighteenth century to the present day. Ian A.C. Dejardin isthe Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London. He graduated with aMaster (Hons) in History of Art from Edinburgh University; appointed Curator atDulwich in 1997, he became the gallery's Director in 2005 and since then haspresided over a varied and international exhibition program. MaryAnne Stevensis an independent art historian and curator who has previously worked at theRoyal Academy of Arts, London, as Director of Academic Affairs, before servingas Acting Secretary for three years.
