The Regis University collection of New Mexican Santos is the largest teaching collection of santos in the United States. Documenting some 300 pieces of Spanish colonial and contemporary devotional art, this book also tells the story of the acquisition of the santos, beginning with the authors purchase of an old painting for $10 when he was still a student. This unique collection includes the work of master santeros from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as contemporary masters such as Charlie Carrillo and Max Roybal. In addition to painted and carved saints, the Regis collection includes milagros, crosses, candelabra, and handkerchief art.

The Regis University Collection of New Mexican Santos is the largest teaching collection of santos in the United States. This book documents three hundred pieces of Spanish Colonial and contemporary devotional art that have been assembled by Father Thomas Steele over thirty years. This is the first time an entire collection of New Mexican santos has been documented for the general public. Although the book tells the stories behind the acquisition of the santos over a thirty year period, the tradition and images cover almost four hundred years of New Mexican history. The collection contains examples of the master santeros from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as well as contemporary masters like Charlie Carrillo, Felix Lopez, Max Roybal, Gustavo Victor Goler, Alcario Otero, Arlene Cisneros Sena, Frank Brito, Jimmy Trujillo and David Nabor Lucero.

Over the past decade, tremendous attention has been focused on the arts of 18th and 19th century New Mexico. This period, prior to statehood in 1912, is termed colonial and benefited from a creative and religious culture that populated the region. Retablos, painted panels depicting the various saints worshipped in the churches and private homes, were an important part of the rich history. This catalogue is the premier publication of an exceptional and rare collection and fully represents the breadth of retablos painting. Introductory essays describing the art and religious values as well as religious dimensions of specific artists' intent and stylistic development are captured. Individual descriptive entries examining the iconography and social history of each painting complete the presentation which will be of great use to the ongoing study of southwestern art, history and collecting.

The Santo Nio de Atocha is a Roman Catholic depiction of the Infant Jesus and is popular in the Hispanic cultures of Spain, Mexico, and the southwestern United States, especially New Mexico. Millions of pilgrims every year turn to the Santo Nino de Atocha for intercession. For the first time, the Novena dedicated to the Holy Child of Atocha is available in English. Three New Mexico scholars/authors have worked together to produce the Novena in both English and Spanish. The compilation and translation work took five years to complete.
