This classic transport history book by the late Jack Sirnmons is reissued to coincide with the transformation of the station into the new terminus for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The station and its hotel are unique buildings. The station used groundbreaking engineering in having (and still having) the largest single span roof in Europe. The hotel, built by George Gilbert Scott, is a masterpiece of neo?Gothic. Both station and hotel suffered decline in the 20th century and were threatened with demolition, but they are now about to enter into a new role as the station is doubled in size, and the hotel is once again made into a spectacular hotel and apartments. The book has been sensitively revised, and with a new chapter bringing the story up to date, by architectural historian Robert Thorne. This book is a must for anyone interested in railways.

Excerpt from Small Talk at WreylandIn case this volume should be ready by anyone who has not read its predecessor, I am quoting these three paragraphs from that by way of explanation.And first, about the place itself,Wreyland is land by the Wrey, a little stream in Devonshire. The Wrey flows into the Bovey, and the Bovey into the Teign, and the Teign flows out into the sea at Teignmouth. The land is on the east side of the Wrey, just opposite the village of Lustleigh. It forms a manor, and gives its name to a hamlet of six houses, of which this is one.Secondly, about my writing all these things,Down here, when any of the older natives die, I hear people lamenting that so much local knowledge has died with them, and saying that they should have written things down. Fearing that this might soon be said of me, I got a book last Christmas - 1916 - and began to write things down. Professor Jack Simmons was the most eminent railway historian of his time. His magnum opus was to have been a four volume study of the railways in England and Wales between 1830 and 1914. It is a regret the work was never completed but Faber Finds are proud to reissue the two volumes that were published. The first volume describes the growth of the railway system from the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway to the outbreak of the First World War. The second half of the book discusses the technology of railways, their track and civil engineering, the machines and vehicles used and the safety precautions developed for controlling an increasingly complex system. A final chapter considers the private companies that built and owned the railways. An appendix examines the services offered to passengers, especially that English invention, the express train.
