From the collection of the renowned photography critic and curator Vince Aletti, Male collects photographs, paintings and artifacts on the theme of the male body, amassed over the last 30 years. Aletti's collection was first presented at New York's White Columns gallery in February 2008, and is a wild blend of anonymous and iconic art and photography from the nineteenth century to the present, a visual cacophony that distinguishes Aletti's taste and appetite as a collector. Among the known photographers in the collection are Alexandr Rodchenko, Nan Goldin, Marco Breuer, Aaron Siskind, Gary Schneider, Peter Hujar, Bill Jacobson, McDermott and McGough, Weegee, George Platt Lynes, Larry Clark, Danny Lyon and Malick Sidibe. Alongside reproductions, a gatefold page displays the works as they are installed in Aletti's New York home, and Collier Schorr contributes an essay recording the impact the collection has had on her own work and view of photography. Schorr writes: “Art history, written mainly by men, has shied away from the male figure... Aletti's collection… creates a Cosmos: at once a microcosm of gay male life, a personal fantasy, and the infinite, enveloping World.”

Schorr's earliest works utilised appropriated adverts from fashion magazines to address issues of authorship and desire; the works introduced a female gaze into the debate about female representation. Appropriation was Schorr's first medium and in some sense she returns to it, taking her own commissioned fashion images and folding them into a dialogue with other works.The works in 8 Women propose a variety of subjects, all of whom are involved in performance, be it as artists, models or musicians. Schorr, who has been working in fashion for the last 10 years, created sets that doubled as her studio, teasing out images that could only be made with a subject that could travel between the object of desire and the enforcer of an identity crafted in that very moment. Collier Schorr met Paul Hameline, a young French artist and model, in New York in 2015. A friend of friend, he came to her home for a "go-see", which is when a photographer gets to see how a model looks in front of the camera. Paul's family lives in the Marais section of Paris around the corner from the hotel Collier stays at while in Paris, so they began to meet and to make a project that lasted two years in which Collier would visit Paul at his parents' house and take pictures and talk. The idea was for Paul and Collier to experience photography as a social space, a conversation in which his body and her eyes could try and understand each other's fascinations and fantasies. Many of the pictures were published in Re Edition magazine. Paul's Book expands that magazine story to form a larger piece about the way in which a photographer and model can search for some greater revelations with the simplest movements and various states of undress.
