<p>Thomas Sully (1783–1872) painted some of the most dynamic personalities of the 19th century, including Queen Victoria, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Although he created more than two thousand portraits and subject paintings, his full production has never before been examined in depth. The child of actors, Sully’s lifelong connection to the theater informed his imagination. His portraits of 19th-century actors, celebrities, royalty, and politicians established his reputation, and would mark all his works, particularly his “fancy pictures,” portraits evoking scenes from literature, fairy tales, Shakespeare, or of his own devising. This essential introduction demonstrates how the artist interpreted the nature of painting as performance, manifested in his dazzling productions. <p>An important catalog of one of the preeminent collections of British and American art. This volume highlights 126 of the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley’s outstanding examples of English and American paintings and decorative arts. Julian Wood Glass Jr. (1910–1992) created this distinctive collection to furnish his living quarters, particularly his ancestral home Glen Burnie Historic House in Winchester, Virginia. Among its treasures are stunning eighteenth-century British portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Thomas Gainsborough, and George Romney, American paintings by Rembrandt Peale, John Singleton Copley, and William Merritt Chase, antique English and American silver and furniture, including outstanding objects by the Seymour family of Boston and a couch owned by Queen Charlotte of England. The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is a dynamic museum complex located in Winchester, Virginia; it is dedicated to interpreting, presenting, and celebrating the art and culture of its region. The museum's main building was designed by Michael Graves and Associates. It opened in 2005.</p>

During the 1830s, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp (1790-1864) spent his winters in Louisiana, establishing himself as the region's leading portrait painter.Â  He was, quite simply, the best-educated artist yet to have worked in New Orleans.Â  Author William Keyse Rudolph traces the life and work of the French portraitist.
