Presenting a comparison of examples from New Orleans's three intermingling silver traditions French, American, and German Crescent City Silver features 130 pieces by 32 makers from the holdings of The Historic New Orleans Collection, the LSU Museum of Art, as well as several private collections. A 2007 reprint of the original 1980 exhibition catalogue for the groundbreaking exhibition Crescent City Silver: An Exhibition of Nineteenth-Century New Orleans Silver. The exhibition opened in April 1980 at The Historic New Orleans Collection and then in September 1980 traveled to the Anglo-American Art Museum at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA (today known as the LSU Museum of Art).

To celebrate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase, The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) has pursued the ambitious goal of publishing an atlas that depicts Louisiana's history through maps. The result of those efforts is Charting Louisiana. This book, THNOC's bicentennial gift to the public, offers a rich selection of historic and contemporary maps from various sources that collectively illustrate the region's diverse history, from its multinational colonial experiences to the modern American state. Charting Louisiana presents 104 maps from THNOC's holdings, representing the full range of the institution's cartographic treasures. The atlas also features sixty-seven important works from the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress—custodian of the largest cartographic collection in the world—and contributions from other United States repositories, including the Louisiana State Museum and Chicago's Newberry Library. Archives in France, Spain, Great Britain, and Mexico generously provided the balance, as befits Louisiana's international history. The product of this cooperative effort is an unprecedented compilation of 193 high-quality reproductions of important maps illustrating the development of Louisiana from the early sixteenth century to the present, along with historical essays providing a broader context for understanding the maps. Complete with a detailed cartobibliography and list of selected readings, Charting Louisiana is a lush, captivating, and valuable source of information for history buffs, scholars, and map lovers, providing ample opportunities for new interpretations of the state's history as well as that of the nation.

Charting Louisiana: Five Hundred Years of Maps

Inspired by the bayous, marshes, and lagoons of southern Louisiana, artist George Louis Viavant (1872-1925) produced exquisite paintings of the birds, fish, and small game that he knew so well from years spent hunting on his family's property just outside of New Orleans. The illustrated biography relates the story of a man whose work won acclaim from hunters both in Louisiana and other parts of the country. He studied under prominent artist and sculptor Achille Perelli and, like Perelli, specialized in nature morte paintings. His meticulous watercolors expertly capture each feather and fin of his subject, which he depicted, after the hunt, hanging from a small cord or string. Here was the bounty of the hunt, as realistic as the bird or fish itself.
Author George E. Jordan has used the Viavant family papers in the holdings of The Historic New Orleans Collection to trace the family's history and to describe Viavant's life as an artist of the hunt. Mr. Jordan also presents an analysis of the artist's works, placing Viavant's paintings in the context of the art world in New Orleans in the early 20th century. The book is illustrated with reproductions of numerous works by Viavant---including paintings by George's daughter Ruby---from the holdings of local museums and private collections.

During the 1830s, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp (1790-1864) spent his winters in Louisiana, establishing himself as the region's leading portrait painter.Â  He was, quite simply, the best-educated artist yet to have worked in New Orleans.Â  Author William Keyse Rudolph traces the life and work of the French portraitist. A star pupil of French master Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, Jean-Joseph Vaudechamp enjoyed a promising apprenticeship in Parisbut a competitive marketplace threatened to deny him the full measure of his artistic inheritance. In the winter of 183132, he left home to test his fortunes in New Orleans, a thriving city whose boundaries and population were expanding. Vaudechamps' sitters, the majority of them French Creoles, were making a clear statement of cultural identity and allegiance by choosing a French artist. His works helped revitalize the Creole community. Vaudechamp in New Orleans is the most thorough examination to date of the career of this remarkable artist.
