Who are you? What defines you? What makes you, you?
In the past an individual's identity was more predictable than it is today. Life's big questions were basically settled before you were born: where you'd live, what you'd do, the type of person you'd marry, your basic beliefs, and so on. Today personal identity is a do-it-yourself project. Constructing a stable and satisfying sense of self is hard amidst relationship breakdowns, the pace of modern life, the rise of social media, multiple careers, social mobility, and so on. Ours is a day of identity angst.
Known by God is built on the observation that humans are inherently social beings; we know who we are in relation to others and by being known by them. If one of the universal desires of the self is to be known by others, being known by God as his children meets our deepest and lifelong need for recognition and gives us a secure identity. Rosner argues that rather than knowing ourselves, being known by God is the key to personal identity.
He explores three biblical angles on the question of personal identity: being made in the image of God, being known by God and being in Christ. The notion of sonship is at the center - God gives us our identity as a parent who knows his child. Being known by him as his child gives our fleeting lives significance, provokes in us needed humility, supplies cheering comfort when things go wrong, and offers clear moral direction for living.

The stories and instruction in the Old Testament book of Exodus seem more at home in a museum than in today's world. Author s preface Most scholars come at Paul and the law as interpreters of Romans and Galatians. My background and perspective are somewhat different. Although I have taught the exegesis of both letters, most of my research has been in three different areas: 1 Corinthians, Paul's ethics, and the Jewish background to Paul s letters. With these interests to the fore, I am as much concerned about what Paul does with the law, especially for questions of conduct, as I am with what Paul says about the law. I have been pondering the subject since the beginning of my doctoral studies in the late 1980s and in one sense this book is an attempt to complete that project. As one reviewer of my published dissertation complained, Paul, Scripture and Ethics 'does not account for Paul's approach to the Mosaic law'. My goal is to bring some neglected evidence to the discussion and to defend some proposals that sharpen and build on the work of others. I have sought to write something fresh and readable, which examines enough trees to sketch a reliable guide to the wood, along with a map of the broader lie of the land (for subjects related to the law, like justification and ethics).

Paul, Scripture and Ethics evaluates the widely held view that Scripture did not play an important role in the formation of Paul's ethics by investigating 1 Corinthians 5-7. It concludes that in spite of the relatively few quotations of Scripture and other indications to the contrary, Scripture is nevertheless a crucial and formative source for Paul's moral teaching. The major lines and many of the details of Paul's ethics in these chapters are traced back into the Scriptures, in most cases by way of Jewish sources. The conclusion is drawn that the Scriptures were for Paul not only "witness to the Gospel" but "written for our instruction." The work has considerable implications for the study of Christian origins, the interpretation of the New Testament and for the question of Paul and the Law.
