In the 1960s, Chicago was the second largest city in the United States and the site of cultural and political upheaval-including the protests surrounding the 1968 Democratic convention. Despite this turmoil- or perhaps because of it-Chicago forged its own artistic brand with the emergence of the Chicago Imagists. Drawing inspiration from the everyday world, comic books, popular culture, pornography, Surrealism, and non-western art, these young artists, in a series of exhibitions at the Hyde Park Art Center, created energetic, figurative paintings with vibrant colors that were titled with humorous puns. Chicago Imagists includes six essays and an extensive chronology and provides critical analysis of the arresting, but sometimes overlooked, work of Roger Brown, Sarah Canright, James Falconer, Ed Flood, Art Green, Philip Hanson, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt, Ed Paschke, Christina Ramberg, Suellen Rocca, Barbara Rossi, and Karl Wirsum. In this volume Madison Museum of Contemporary Art curator of collections, Richard H. Axsom draws strong corollaries between the coastal movements of Pop art and this younger, Midwestern version. Curator Lynne Warren traces the origin of the term "Chicago Imagists," and in a second essay delves into sexuallycharged humor of these works, paying close attention to their titles. MMoCA director Stephen Fleischman discusses the forward-thinking collectors, critics, curators, and dealers who championed this work before it was recognized on a national level. MMoCA curator Jane Simon finds reflections of the political, social, and cultural transformation of the 1960s in the work of the Imagists. Over a third of the Imagists were women, and feminist scholar Cécile Whiting examines how these women artists rethought femininity. This volume is essential for anyone interested in drawing, painting, prints, sculpture, and American art.

Drawn from the permanent collection of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, THE SINGING BIRD ROOM OF ROBERT LOSTUTTER surveys the work of one of the leading Chicago artists of recent decades. The exhibition, which includes more than thirty watercolors, drawings, prints, and oil paintings, will be on view in the State Street Gallery of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art from October 5, 2012, to January 6, 2013. Works in the exhibition date from the late 1960s to the late 1990s, and are drawn from the Bill McClain Collection of Chicago Imagism, an exceptional private collection that was made available to MMoCA approximately three years ago. Lostutter shared the Imagists' interests in a figurative art of vibrant color and graphic line based on personal fantasy. In the early 1970s, a sojourn in Mexico and his love of nature led Robert Lostutter to seize upon a theme that came to define his mature style. A superb draftsman and watercolorist, he began making portraits of male figures adorned with the plumage of tropical birds or the petals and leaves of orchids. Lostutter's mythic creatures are both disturbing and radiantly beautiful, fusions of animal and human, nature and culture. THE SINGING BIRD ROOM OF ROBERT LOSTUTTER is accompanied by a fully illustrated 60-page catalog, which is funded, in part, through a generous contribution from Mark and Judy Bednar.

The Prints of Frank Stella: A Catalogue Raisonne, 1967-1982 (anexhibition catalogue)

For more than sixty years, Ellsworth Kelly has been making prints, prints that are integral to his art as a whole. The abstract lithographs, screenprints, and etchings celebrate, as do Kelly’s paintings and sculptures, the sensuous primacy of vibrant color merged with emphatic shape. The plant lithographs rephrase in lithographic crayon the spontaneity of his plant drawings in ink and pencil. Together, their contemplative lyricism places them among the most beautiful prints ever made. Now Kelly’s complete oeuvre in prints is gathered into a two-volume catalogue raisonné, each of the more than three hundred works reproduced in color with full documentation. In addition, two essays—one on the work before 1987 and one on the work since then—elucidate the artist’s sources, working methods, stylistic evolution, and all-important collaborations with printers and printmaking workshops. A chronology further places the prints in context.
