The 21st Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money will be released at the Canadian Numismatic Association convention in Ottawa, July 17 20, 2008. New in this catalogue are listings of SNRs single note replacements. This is a quite recent development in collecting, pursued by Journey Note enthusiasts. In response to a good suggestion from a contributor, the Journey note listings have now been separated into three categories regular issue notes, sheet replacement notes and single note replacements. This should make the listings much easier to navigate. Tips for Collectors introduced in the 20th edition and containing note census data and other useful information, proved to be a popular innovation. Consequently many additional Tips are provided in the new edition, and all census information, drawn from published registers, has been brought up to date. In this edition prices continue to move forward for most areas, and retreat in a few. The market for Dominion notes remains quite strong, current economic uncertainty notwithstanding, and prices have moved ahead for many issues and grades, with none in decline. The situation with Bank of Canada notes is more mixed. Notes of the 1935 issue continue to attain ever higher price levels for most denominations and grades. Notes of the 1937 issue signed Osborne-Towers show strength, while values for 1954 Devil s Face asterisk notes climb even higher. The 1954 modified portrait replacement notes show modest advances or are steady. Selected notes from the multicolour issue, and especially the birds issue, have fallen in price to reflect current market reality. A few Journey notes have declined in value, notably the $10 prefix BER printed in 2003, which is not quite as rare as it once seemed, but avid insert replacement note collectors keep demand strong for notes in their specialty. Solid number notes and especially serial number 1 notes have risen substantially in value, although demand for millions numbered notes has not been increasing. Most error note values are holding steady at this time, with very spotty increases. More listings have been added, including a few early proofs, a newly discovered replacement prefix and some new error notes, and of course new prefixes released in the past year have been brought up to date. The Sixth Edition of Canadian Bank Notes is scheduled for release at the Canadian Numismatic Association Convention in Ottawa in July 2008. Valuations for the note issues of many banks have moved ahead aggressively despite the possibility of economic recession, because recent market and auction activity indicate that the market for chartered bank notes continues to be very buoyant. While valuations for such popular notes as those of the Bank of Nova Scotia, the Canadian Bank of Commerce and the Royal Bank of Canada have surged ahead as expected, many notes long considered to be Cinderella material have also participated in this very broad advance. Included are many of the black and white issues of the first half of the nineteenth century and the often rare but not always in demand notes of the francophone banks. Pre-Confederation redeemable notes from institutions such as the Bank of Montreal have been revalued sharply upwards because of increased competition among collectors for such notes, which previously had been rather neglected. It will not be easy to find notes whose values have remained static, or declined because of oversupply, but there are a few. The valuations of most proof and specimen notes are also being driven higher by a rapidly expanding collector base, the chief exception being untinted proofs of normally coloured notes, which are not in favour at this time. The Charlton Press has obtained a copy of the American Bank Note Company order book, and much of the information found in it has been incorporated into the sixth edition. This information, practically unavailable anywhere else, greatly enhances the usefulness of the volume as a reference work. The note census information ( Tips for Collectors ) which proved quite popular in the last edition has been brought up to date and greatly expanded in the new catalogue, to give the collector the best available information to assist in the making of informed decisions. The valuations of Royal Bank of Canada notes for its Southern Branches have been drastically overhauled in the light of note population numbers. While much of the note census information is based on published note registers, some of it has never been published and is unavailable from any other source. Finally, a number of discoveries of both new note types and new varieties of known notes have added excitement to collecting since the last edition was prepared, and they have been incorporated in the new volume. The Sixth Edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Bank Notes consists of 592 pages, in the same 8 1/2 by 11 format as the previous editions. Weak market conditions continue to erode the valuations of many forms of government-issued Canadian paper money. The 1954 modified issues have suffered the sharpest losses, although most of the rarest replacement prefixes have been immune, selling at steady prices. One particular 1954 test note has recorded a price increase of almost 130%, based on a recent bona-fide sale. A considerable portion of insert replacement notes are now trading a bit lower although they retain an enthusiastic collector base. In most other categories some prices are up and some are down within any specific issue, with most of the fluctuations fairly moderate in either direction. Valuations for some of the more spectacular error notes have increased, particularly those which seem to be harder to find than once thought. Among special number notes, single digit radar notes remain in strong demand, while modern three and four digit radars continue to lose traction. Some notes which rarely appear on the market have recently been involved in transactions, prompting substantial catch-up increases, notably Army Bills and Bank Legals. Changes made for the 23rd Edition include elimination of pricing for notes - and grades - which, to the best of our knowledge, are unavailable to the collecting public. Many new tips for collectors have been added for this edition, and note census information has been updated to provide the latest population figures. Several very rare Dominion note proofs and specimens have been listed for the first time in this edition. Listings for the 1917 Princess Patricia Dominion notes have been expanded in detail, in response to the needs of collectors who wish to acquire these lovely notes by variety and prefix. The former table of printing date changeover numbers for Journey notes has been integrated with the checklist of prefixes to offer fuller information in a more convenient format. New prefixes issued since the last edition have been brought up to date, and the latest available insert replacement note ranges have been added.

A major innovation which will make this edition particularly memorable is the introduction of colour images. Wherever possible, notes are now shown in their actual colours.  The wild swings in pricing which characterized editions released over the past few years appear to be over. There are many increases and many decreases, but the changes represent fine-tuning more than radical shifts in either direction. The pricing panel generally sense a market that seems to have returned to something closer to stability. The market remains soft but there are hopeful signs that the bottom has finally been reached. Notes are selling, but may remain in inventory much longer than in the heady days prior to the late recession.  Front of the book notes - French regime, provincial, municipal and depression - are generally steady or advancing in value. The picture is a little more mixed for Dominion notes, with some up or down by relatively small amounts, and some are unchanged. Some modern notes, from the 1954 modified series onward, continue to lose ground but at a greatly slackened pace, and, as previously, the rarities appear generally to be immune. Among the 1954 modified notes, most prices are stable but some of the replacement prefixes have been subject to downward correction, as have the $100s generally. A few modest increases can be found here and there.  Canadian Journey replacement note prices remain fairly steady. Changes to the low-security $5 and $10 series are predominantly to the upside. Among the later issues with hologram strips, increases and decreases are more nearly balanced.  Special number notes are mainly steady to modestly higher, with only repeater notes losing ground. Error notes are holding to somewhat higher, depending on the nature of the error. These sections of the catalogue have been expanded, with more notes illustrated, and a few new kinds of errors added. Binary numbered notes (defined as all ones and zeroes in the serial number) have been listed for the first time, catering to a small specialty within the hobby.  Listings have been brought quite up to date, with new prefixes and signature combinations added as late as June 2011, when there was a sudden proliferation in circulation. Note census information has also been revised and brought up to date, and additional Dominion note proofs appearing on the market have been listed. Journey replacement note ranges have also been revised and updated.

The Seventh Edition of Canadian Bank Notes is scheduled for release in June 2011.
 Surprisingly, in contrast to the lacklustre performances of many other collectibles in the present difficult market, prices of many Canadian chartered bank notes have moved ahead, and quite decisively too. Most collectors, it seems, do not rush for the exits during economic turbulence, but keep doggedly collecting. It is not at all difficult to find notes which have doubled in value since the previous edition was released almost three years ago, and some have tripled, quadrupled and more. Only a few notes show even a modest decline in value, and these tend to be common and lower grade notes which have a tendency to accumulate in dealer stocks in depressed times.
 Not long ago, valuations reaching five figures were exceptional. With this edition, they have become quite numerous. The top valued note is the Bank of Vancouver $5 number 1 note which recently sold for about $175,000. A second note, the 1903 Bank of Montreal double-size $50, is poised to threaten the six-figure barrier if and when it is offered for sale.
 Notes of the Southern Branches of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Bank of Nova Scotia and Royal Bank of Canada have led the charge, many showing massive increases in value. Many specimen notes have also moved up sharply. Increases in both of these collecting areas seem to have been driven by international demand at least as much as by the domestic market. Large catch-up increases are also seen among a wide selection of very rare notes that are seldom traded, and have thus been to an extent off the radar . Action is spotty on proof notes. Some, especially untinted proofs, seem dormant and the contrarian may sense an opportunity. Among tinted proofs, some are up and some are flat, but selected examples have shown strength.
 The recent publication on an important paper on Bank of Montreal notes of the Province of Canada period has facilitated useful improvements in that section of the catalogue. Coverage of the Bank Crest Issue of 1852-56 in particular has been expanded to provide separate listings for each branch issue.
 Over the past several editions there has been steady progress toward pricing only notes which are known to exist in private hands, and only in grades available to the collector. This process has continued in the new catalogue as work on surviving note registers continues, with a sharp reduction in the numbers of price entries for several banks whose notes are quite rare, eliminating what current knowledge indicates is unobtainable or nonexistent. Inevitably, a small number of notes have turned up which were previously known only in museums or bank archives, and their price listings have been restored.
 A few interesting additional varieties have been added, including a few newly discovered types, and note population numbers have been brought up to date. This catalogue contains more information than ever before to assist the collector with purchasing decisions. Many new tips for collectors have been added, a lot of them containing information unavailable from any other source. Newly added or improved diagnostics will assist the collector in identifying various counterfeit bank notes. Novice collectors have sometimes been deceived by worthless modern reproductions of historic notes, and guidance for avoiding them is provided.

The latest version of this popular catalogue includes a new section for the Bank of Canada s polymer notes, and the grading guide at the front of the book has been expanded to include grading standards for polymer. Prefix and changeover information has been brought completely up to date. Valuable note census information records the latest findings, and a new tip for collectors analyses Newfoundland Treasury Notes of 1920 with results that the publisher hopes will be useful and informative.
 The expert pricing panel worked very hard to follow what has been a largely directionless and subdued market. Reports received from both ends of the country indicate, however, that a firming trend has been in evidence since the late winter of 2012. With price changes in this edition firming, a market bottom is building for the next up-cycle. Where positive and negative sentiment is balanced, prices have usually been left unchanged. There are a number of instances of prices increasing at either the low or high end of the grading scale, with a little softening in the middle, reflecting the preferences of today s market-makers.
 There have been instances of significant price advances, though. These include most of the Specimen notes, as well as the 1923 $2 Dominion Notes in top grades, following several recent sales at record-smashing prices. The rarity of several replacement notes, on many want lists but hardly ever available on the market, is gradually becoming recognized, resulting in substantial price increases.
 Among the more recent Bank of Canada notes, there have been more changes seen in the Journey notes than in the Multicoloured and Birds issues, and there increases outnumber downward revisions.
 The use of full colour images, introduced in the last edition, continues. This innovation, warmly welcomed by the collecting fraternity, has been widely credited with helping to attract new participants to the hobby.
 The 25th Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money is scheduled for release in July. This volume consists of 440 7 x 9 inch pages (approximately), with the popular lie-flat spiral binding.

The pricing panel once again report a soft market, but there has been a noticeable strengthening of demand for popular, low cost, entry level notes, which can only bode well for the hobby. Pricing changes mainly reflect fine tuning rather than broad trends. That said, it is true that price increases outnumber decreases by a substantial margin. Rare and popular notes continue to shine, as they would in almost any market, as demonstrated by recent sales of a Province of Canada $10, a 1924 Queen Mary $5 and a 1986 $5 GOG0 test note on Luminus substrate, all at prices north of $20,000. The error note section at the back of the book has seen some rather sharp upward revisions as a result of the sale of the Tom Merritt collection in 2012. Recent very strong sales of Newfoundland cash notes, 1901 - 1909, are reflected in significantly higher prices for most, particularly in VF grade. Depression scrip continues to trend higher, by modest increments, and most of the Specimen notes continue to gain ground. Premiums for Gem Uncirculated Dominion notes are, generally speaking, considerably higher than previously. On the negative side, most 1986 $2 notes from the first signature changeover period remain too plentiful to support even their reduced valuations, and have therefore been subjected to further cuts. Pricing has been tied to Canadian grading practices, as described in the front of the catalogue, which should help clear up confusion resulting from the prevalence of notes of the market which have been graded by incompatible standards. In addition to the annual updating of prefixes and census data, a few more images are now in colour. There is a new 1971 $10 replacement range, and new listings for Prince Edward Island treasury notes have been added. A brief reference explains Province of Canada bond proofs from the American Bank Note Co. Archives Sale, as we get so many questions about them. The 26th Edition of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money will be available at the RCNA Convention, Winnipeg, in July.

Market conditions have remained somewhat challenging, and once again price changes represent fine tuning rather than broad shifts. There are even instances where prices increase in one part of the grading spectrum and decrease in another part, for the same note. Nevertheless, price increases overall will be found to outnumber the decreases to a significant extent. Valuations for the 1935 Bank of Canada issue, which historically have increased routinely, remain fairly static except for superior gem uncirculated notes, which have been shattering records recently, apparently the result of competition among "registry set" collectors for the best of the best. Most $1,000 notes also continue an upward trajectory. Many modern notes, 1954 to date, are still too plentiful on the market to stage much of a recovery yet. Great rarities are, as always, the exception, and the ultra-rare 1954 $1 *C/I replacement note has increased by several hundred per cent, based on an auction result in the May 2014 Geoffrey Bell sale. Many of the provincial and municipal issues are showing distinct signs of strength. Among Dominion of Canada notes, early fractionals are beginning to move and there are consistent reports of good demand for later fractionals in lower grades. Scalloped border 1878 $1 notes payable at Montreal or Toronto are showing signs of increasing interest, but would still appear to be bargain priced considering their scarcity. At the back of the catalogue, there are quite a few increases, mostly modest, for special serial number notes. It will be interesting to watch for radar and other special serial number notes printed by CBN going forward, as these are now being well mixed prior to distribution, with the likelihood of a dramatic reduction in the supply entering the collector market. Price movements, up or down, are rather spotty for error notes after last year's major advances. New content for this edition, apart from the usual new issues, replacement ranges and prefix updates, includes several additional "tips for collectors", and previous census data have been revised to reflect the latest figures. The recently discovered second issue $1 Army Bill has been added, although retail pricing will have to await its eventual sale. There is a brief new section introducing Journey specimen notes, which were not regularly issued. In response to suggestions received, illustrations of error notes are now given complete identifying numbers, to assist catalogue users with identification. The descriptions of fold and cut errors have been reworked a little to make the text more easily understood. Unfortunately, it has become necessary to insert a warning against fraudulently produced notes with inverted backs, as there have been recent instances of this rubbish selling for heavy prices on an internet auction site. Every effort has been made to enhance value for users of the book, and to present useful information for collectors to take into the paper money market.
