In Walkscapes Francesco Careri explores the act of walking, taking a deeper look at three important moments of passage in art history—all absolutely familiar to historians—in which an experience linked to walking represented a turning point. These are the passages from Dada to Surrealism (1921-1924), from the Lettrist International to the Situationist International (1956-1957), and from Minimal Art to Land Art (1966-1967). By analyzing these episodes we simultaneously obtain a history of the roamed city that goes from the banal city of Dada to the entropic city of Robert Smithson, passing through the unconscious and oneiric city of the Surrealists and the playful and nomadic city of the Situationists. What the rovings of the artists discover is a liquid city, an amniotic fluid where the spaces of the elsewhere take spontaneous form, an urban archipelago in which to navigate by drifting. A city in which the spaces of staying are the islands in the great sea formed by the space of going. Fundamentally, for Careri, the act of walking—although it does not constitute a physical construction of a space—implies a transformation of a place and its meanings. The mere physical presence of humans in an unmapped space, as well as the variations of perceptions they register while crossing it, already constitute forms of transformation of the landscape that—without leaving tangible signs—culturally modify the meaning of space and therefor the space itself. I Remembered chronicles my experience—at age forty-nine—when I recalled the sexual abuse by my father as a young girl. Through my journal entries, represented here verbatim, I share my journey to heal from the aftermath of this profound awakening. My story is one of survival. It follows the course of the first year of healing—from my psychotic break and diagnosis of PTSD and paranoia, through the flashbacks and memories, my disclosure to family, working through the grief process, and finally to acceptance and forgiveness. My story is one of survival and hope—one that will interest fellow survivors of sexual abuse, loved ones who want to help them, the recovery community, and those with a general interest in this subject. Silence and shame are hallmarks of sexual abuse and my story lends a personal voice to what survivors experience in their struggle to heal. I read several books on the subject of healing from sexual abuse, and I could not find one like this which shares what it is like to work through this overwhelming process. My story is raw and unflinching, and my purpose in sharing it is to lend hope and help to other survivors.

The book is the story of a young American girl living in South Africa during the early years of apartheid (1948-1960). One of six children of a Swedenborgian minister who was sent to South Africa to establish a theological school for Africans, the author reaches back into this unique time and place in an effort to rediscover the culture that influenced her own adult attitudes. Rather than following a strictly chronological format, the story is laid out in a series of verbal snapshots, supported by photographs. Family life, experienced through the eyes of a child living in a complex environment, contrasts with the lives of those who were impacted by the institutionalized racism of apartheid. Examples of the Acts of apartheid at the end of each chapter include news articles, interviews, and commentary. Deep childhood fears of some unnamed threat are represented by home invasions, wildfires, and the cry of a hyena in the mountains. The mountains are dangerous, they present a great barrier, but they can be conquered. After returning permanently to America as a teenager—through a confusing and sometimes painful process of discussion and observation—the author uncovers those artifacts of the past that inform her place in the world today. Screening for Potential Injuries Before You Start 2. Biomechanics: learning good technique always beats "getting stronger". This is the main argument of the book. 3. The Key Points that make up the Grab'N'Go system: - Five parts of running: - Symmetry of arms and legs; - Posture for ergonomics-this is important. - Master these areas before putting more time into anything else. It may take a bit longer to learn but pays off in the long run (pun intended). - We include the appropriate strength and coordination drills for each section, as you need a certain level of strength in order to perform each technique correctly. 4. Build the Machine 5. Speed or Distance? This seems to be the big conundrum for runners. I know I used to think that it was an either/or choice. You were either a distance runner or "one of the speed guys". I now realize that this is no longer true. With a little planning it is possible to work on both parameters as they each have their own benefits. Below we discuss how these very different goals can be merged. 6. Common Injuries and Simple Remedies: none of us like going to the doctor. Every runner at some point or another will experience these, just like falling down and scraping your knee when you learned to ride a bike.
