Redoute's Fairest Flowers

Pierre-Joseph Redoute, often called the "Raphael of flowers", is history's most famous botanical artist. Employed by the Empress Josephine to record the plants and flowers in her lavish gardens at Malmaison, Redoute began his masterpiece in 1802 -- LES LILLACEES, a set of 486 exquisite watercolours painted on vellum. The plates derived from the watercolours were published in an edition of only 200 copies. This present edition reproduces the entire 468 watercolours known to survive from LES LILLACEES, thus conveying to posterity all the scientific and aesthetic brilliance of the originals. With great delicacy and in remarkable detail Redoute captured the shapes and colours not only of the lily family, but of iris, amaryllis, tulips, even pineapple and bananas -- plants that were difficult to press and dry for herbariums, thus making accurate illustrations an invaluable record. The publication of these paintings, which, remarkably, have survived intact for 170 years, seen by hardly anyone, will be a major event, confirming beyond doubt that LES LILLACEES is one of the greatest colourplate books ever published, and that its creator, Redoute, is the greatest illustrator of flowers of all time.

Often called the "Raphael of Flowers," Pierre-Joseph Redoute was court painter and teacher to five French monarchs. His watercolors and engravings have been collected, exhibited and reproduced all over the world, and the originals are rare and coveted collector's items. Redoute's Bouquets consists of eighty-four recently rediscovered prints, that show the full range of this artist's genius. This work has never been catalogued, but it has been authenticated by a number of scholars. Each plate bears his name, and each is an exquisite example of his impeccable sense of color and composition. The work was most probably produced in the 1830's, when Redoute's reputation as a court painter to the regimes of Empress Josephine and Empress Marie Louise was firmly established.

First published in parts between 1817 and 1824, this collection of 167 botanical prints was intended as a scientific treatise. Produced in collaboration with the botanist Claude-Antoine Thory, it achieved early fame for the beauty of the illustrations which show the glory and infinite variety of the rose. Pierre-Joseph Redoute was known in his time as "the Raphael of flowers". He was fortunate in his patronage, enjoying the favours of Queen Marie-Antoinette and the Empress Josephine, whose gardens at Malmaison inspired Redoute, though she did not live to see her protege's great work. The stipple-engraving of the original plates was a process that Redoute learnt in England in 1786 was perfectly matched to the delicacy and accuracy of the original paintings.
