War for the Union: The Organized War to Victory 1864-65 is the 4th of 4 volumes on the Civil War by Allan Nevins, with each volume covering one year of the war. These works do not concentrate on the military campaigns and individual battles of the war but rather all of the support activities that allowed the Union to win the war, to include politics, commerce (industrial capacity, agriculture, transportation assets, etc.) foreign relations, popular support, and overall strategy for victory. Battles and campaigns and the overall progress of the war are certainly mentioned as victories and losses on the battlefield were in essence the ultimate measure of success. This volume, like the other 3, is a magnificent and readable look at all aspects of the 4 year civil war. This Work attempts the difficult task of a reevaluation of the career of the least recognized of the great 20th century artsists. Giacometti's personal life has remained a subject of continuing fascination. In some ways it has acquired emblematic status. Here is the archetypical bohemian artist who after achieving international recognition continues to occupy the same rundown studio in Paris. For Giacometti life and art embodied and expressed a persistent struggle. His was an art of obstruction: of reworking, erasing, decomposing and retrieving. The whole of his aspirations are embodied in his cry - constantly attested to - "to be able to make a head, one head, just once". The present study examines the artist's formative years, his grappling with Cubism in the '20s and his lifelong consideration of two of the major currents of thought of our time: surrealism and existentialism. In 1863 Horace Porter, then a captain, met Ulysses S. Grant as Grant commenced the campaign that would break the Confederate siege at Chattanooga. After a brief stint in Washington, Porter rejoined Grant, who was now in command of all Union forces, and served with him as a staff aide until the end of the war. Porter was at Appomattox as a brevet brigadier general, and this work, written from notes taken in the field, is his eyewitness account of the great struggle between Lee and Grant that led to the defeat of the Confederacy.
