The study of this remarkable urban composition is followed by studies of three quintessential architectural elements of urbanism: the French Hôtel, its English cousin, the London Townhouse, and the Venetian facade. These are followed by seven studies about various aspects of urbanism and the city—studies that argue for the realignment of professional practice and education as functions of a more urban and sustainable future. The penultimate chapter considers the imperative of the contemporary environmental crisis and its relationship to the benefits of the traditional city as the most sustainable form of human habitation. The final chapter explores the idea of transforming the ravaged downtown of South Bend, Indiana by infilling—even the excessively wide streets—into a dense, genuinely habitable urban center. Nearly five hundred illustrations support the essays by providing a parallel visual argument for an urban future.</p>
