A patina of a ghostliness imbues all abandoned towns with the same melancholy ache; whether they be a stereotypical cowboy western town in the American west or a once-thriving port town in Belgium. Once inhabited, and now deserted and set to ruin, they inevitably foreshadow a post-apocalyptic future; or for the less dramatically inclined, they intimate some measure of failure. Photographer Virginia Mayo's exquisitely composed and lush black and white images capture the decay and destruction of Doel, a port town in Belgium with a dwindling population. The authorities want to raze Doel to rebuild it into something shiny, industrial, and new; but in the meantime, it's a ghost town inhabited by a few lonely souls who stubbornly refuse to leave or to take comfortable apartments elsewhere: they are deeply rooted trees who will not be easily shifted to some other patch of earth. Destined to be a star amongst memoirs of simple soldiers of the front line, Harry's War will astonish, chill, enrich and educate the mind of every reader; the text and paintings were not discovered until after his death. Harry volunteered for war and was, and had no desire to be a hero, but his daily battle duties entailed remarkable nerve and bravery. Not only did he volunteer for war, he chose to be trained as a 'bomber' and, by so doing, joined the 'suicide club' so termed because of the minimal life expectancy of those in the unit. The task was straightforward - train to hurl grenades at the enemy whilst they shot and threw grenades back at you. This was close-up war, you really could see the whites of your opponent's eyes! Harry survived the war, just; an arm injury ensured that he was in England when it ended. The modest style of his story denotes a man doing his duty for his country without question or complaint; his paintings are full of character but are also basic and naïve, though all the more pertinent for that. Harry's War is destined to be relived by a new generation! Harry's story lay untouched until his death in the 1960s. Virginia Clara Jones, born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1920, never wanted to play the usual childhood games with her chums; she only wanted to "play show." And indeed as a child, she did appear in many shows in and around St. Louis. As Virginia grew into her teen years, she began to dream of dancing and singing at the "Muny Opera" in St. Louis, and eventually she achieved that. From there, the beautiful teenager joined a Vaudeville troupe in a very successful act called "Pansy the Horse," and it was then that Virginia Jones became Virginia Mayo. Virginia went from the Muny, to Vaudeville, to films and the stage, but it was in films where the world saw and learned to love her the most. Equally talented in all acting genres, Virginia's musicals are her most memorable and were the ones she loved, and loved to perform in, above all others. Her talent and beauty were so dazzling, the Sultan of Morocco was prompted to send a letter to the studio heads of Warner Brothers saying "Virginia Mayo is tangible proof of the existence of God." "I just put my head down and did the work. All I ever wanted in my life was to do the work." This became her show business credo. Virginia Mayo "played show," did the work and did it well.
