Two senior British Army officers look at the past, present and future of the Chiefs of Staff. They trace the development of the system, which has provided the model for many other countries, from its origins and through both World Wars to the Falklands conflict - a campaign that moulded together political, strategic and tactical considerations. The authors aim for a balance between an appreciation of the individual Chiefs, with regard both to their own personalities and to their status as professional Heads of Services, and a review of their collective contribution to war and crisis management. The book also presents an overview of the change of emphasis from 1923, when the Chiefs of Staff gained their corporate responsibility, to the 1984 reorganization, and in its conclusions looks towards possible future developments.

This book looks at the crisis over Kuwait in all its aspects - its background and causes; and the dramatic course of events as they unfolded over the eight tense months which followed the invasion in the first days of August 1990, as seen from the vantage point of the author's action station as British ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Particular emphasis is given to the crucial role played by Saudi Arabia as architect and lynchpin of the widely assorted coalition which came together to confront Iraq's aggression. The author gives a lively first-hand account of successive stages in the crisis, and backs this with an explanation of the factors, some of which go back many years, which led to the rise of Saddam Hussein and the threat he presented to international security. This work reveals the personal experiences of some 19 pilots, navigators and ground support staff in the gulf War, flying a variety of British Aerospace aircraft - Tornado GR-1, Tornado F-3, Jaguar and Harrier. This book is a collection of accounts from participants whose stories are told in their own words, from when they first heard of their deployment to the Gulf until the end of the hostilities. Their experience of arriving in foreign countries which were totally unprepared at the start to accommodate them, of establishing their own bases and modus operandi, of flying endless sorties and of coping with many pressures of modern air combat are all portrayed. The book doesn't question the rights or wrongs of the Gulf War, but presents the human story of some of the combatants. In so doing, it also highlights the underlying silmilarities between the American and British behaviour in war, which are often concealed by apparent differences. This volume follows the 1989 textbook on battlefield CIS by the same authors. It is a detailed case study of the application of the techniques and equipment described in the textbook to one of the largest and certainly the most concentrated use of conventional forces since World War II. After setting the scene, the book considers the nature of the CIS support which would have been available to the force according to the theories put forward in the textbook and the current state of technological development. It then contrasts this hypothetical "ideal" situation with the actual support in place at the time of the land battle. The largest part of the book is devoted to a detailed account of how the CIS support was built up from a combination of existing systems, adapted systems and new systems developed specifically for the campaign, using equipment procured with great urgency during the build-up phase. The account seeks to present not only the bare facts of what was procured and how it was used, but also the complex human and organization reasonswhy things were done the way they were. The book ends with an assessment of the contribution of CIS to the campaign and the major lessons which can be learned for the future
