"I paint what cannot be photographed, I photograph the things that I don't want to paint....I would rather photograph an idea than an object, and a dream rather than an idea." Man Ray's own words suggest the essence of his brilliant, original, and deeply influential photographic oeuvre. Taking up photography in 1915 for the purpose of reproducing his paintings, he earned money doing the same for others when he went to live and work in Paris in 1921. This led to one of the richest careers in the history of photography, ranging from portraits of celebrated artists, musicians, and writers such as Andre Breton, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie, Arnold SchÜnberg, T. S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein, to the pictures using light effects outside the camera for which he is famous (cliche-verres, rayographs, and solarizations). These photographs are among the most exciting and revealing manifestations of the profusely fertile artistic impulse which made Man Ray equally celebrated as a painter, sculptor, writer, and filmmaker. Besides many classic images, this book includes a huge number of photographs that have never been seen before, including portraits of Virginia Woolf and Antonin Artaud and a large selection of erotic pictures. They add up to a truly revealing look at Man Ray, whom Cocteau called "the great poet of the darkroom."

Born in Brooklyn, Man Ray began his career as a commercial artist and photographer, and as a colleague of Marcel Duchamp and the New York Dadaists. He moved to Paris in 1921 and quickly became one of the most celebrated experimentalists of his time, joining Andre Breton, Max Ernst, Tristan Tzara, and Paul Eluard at the vanguard of Surrealism. Among his innovations was the technique of solarization, which bestowed a ghostly silver aura on his sitters. Included here are Man Ray's portraits of Breton, Yves Tanguy, Jean Cocteau, Lee Miller, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, and Gertrude Stein, now classic images that embody the idea of the creative persona. Here too are his endlessly inventive assembled objects and a selection of his striking fashion spreads for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar, as well as his notorious photograph Le Violon d'Ingres, and Noire et Blanche, which in 1994 attracted the highest price ever paid to date for a photograph at auction.

As I recall discovering this book of photographs, I remember the sense of beauty and mystery that remains undiminished almost seventy years after its original publication. On a formal plane, one can easily understand how Man Ray manipulated the optics of the camera, juxtaposing near and far, object against object, space against object, and tactile against transparent. It is also apparent how he deliberately manipulated the process of photographic printmaking, using unusual tones of black, white, and gray to transform content into spaces, forms and surfaces. However, it is not simply how Man Ray manipulated the technical processes that is significant. What is important is how the images function visually, and how the photograph bridges or breaks the gap between what is perceived and/or imagined.
