This is the first full-length biography, and the first to appear in England, of Elsa Triolet (1896-1970), novelist, first woman to win the Prix Goncourt, French Resistance heroine and wife of Louis Aragon,(founder of the surrealist movement and political activist). Elsa's multiple lives are recreated here: from her early life in Russia, to life in Tahiti with her first husband, the sporting dandy Andre Triolet; the strange emigre world of Berlin in the '20s surrounded by artists, Dadaists and surrealists; and finally life in Paris with Louis Aragon whom she met in 1928 and married in 1939. The author also describes Louis Aragon's extraordinary childhood, his previous affair with Nancy Cunard, and his important friendship with Andre Breton. Elsa and Aragon were active in the French Resistance and after the war became Stalinists. This biography brings alive the history of intellectual and artistic life in Europe, and Paris in particular, from the 1920s to the 1970s. Lachlan Mackinnon is a poet and critic who reviews regularly for the "Times Literary Supplement" and has also published works of literary criticism.

Closing Sysco: Industrial Decline in Atlantic Canada's Steel City (Studies in Atlantic Canada History)

Closing Sysco presents a history of deindustrialization and working-class resistance in the Cape Breton steel industry between 1945 and 2001. The Sydney Steel Works is at the heart of this story, having existed in tandem with Cape Breton’s larger coal operations since the early twentieth century. The book explores the multifaceted nature of deindustrialization; the internal politics of the steelworkers’ union; the successful efforts to nationalize the mill in 1967; the years in transition under public ownership; and the confrontations over health, safety, and environmental degradation in the 1990s and 2000s. Closing Sysco moves beyond the moment of closure to trace the cultural, historical, and political ramifications of deindustrialization that continue to play out in post-industrial Cape Breton Island. A significant intervention into the international literature on deindustrialization, this study pushes scholarship beyond the bounds of political economy and cultural change to begin tackling issues of bodily health, environment, and historical memory in post-industrial places.\nThe experiences of the men and women who were displaced by the decline and closure of Sydney Steel are central to this book. Featuring interviews with former steelworkers, office employees, managers, politicians, and community activists, these one-on-one conversations reveal both the human cost of industrial closure and the lingering after-effects of deindustrialization.

The Canadian Mountain Assessment provides a first-of-its-kind look at what we know, do not know, and need to know about mountain systems in Canada. The assessment is based on insights from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledges of mountains, as well as findings from an extensive assessment of pertinent academic literature. Its inclusive knowledge co-creation approach brings these multiple forms of evidence together in ways that enhance our collective understanding of mountains in Canada, while also respecting and maintaining the integrity of different knowledge systems. 
The Canadian Mountain Assessment is a text-based document, but also includes a variety of visual materials as well as access to video recordings of oral knowledges shared by Indigenous individuals from mountain areas in Canada. The assessment is the result of over three years of work, during which time the initiative played an important role in connecting and cultivating relationships between mountain knowledge holders from across Canada. It is the outcome of contributions from more than 80 Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals and contains six chapters: Introduction Mountain Environments Mountains as Homelands Gifts of the Mountains Mountains Under Pressure Desirable Mountain Futures 
By way of these chapters, the Canadian Mountain Assessment aims to enhance appreciation for the diversity and significance of mountains in Canada, to clarify challenges and opportunities for mountain systems in the country, and to motivate and inform new research, relationships, and actions that support the realization of desirable mountain futures. More broadly, the Canadian Mountain Assessment provides insights into applied reconciliation efforts in a knowledge assessment context and seeks to inspire similar knowledge co-creation efforts in and beyond Canada.
