Le catalogue de l'exposition " Degas en noir et blanc ", qui se tiendra du 31 mai au 3 septembre 2023, à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, propose une approche inédite de l'œuvre de l'artiste, peintre, graveur, photographe, à travers sa passion pour le noir et blanc qui lui fit affirmer en 1906 : " Si j'avais à refaire ma vie, je ne ferais que du noir et blanc. "\n" Si j'avais à refaire ma vie, je ne ferais que du noir et blanc ", aurait déclaré Degas à Georges Villa en 1906. Déclaration paradoxale de la part d'un artiste qui doit alors principalement sa gloire aux féeries colorées de ses pastels. 
Mise à l'honneur en 2023 à la Bibliothèque nationale de France, cette inlassable passion de Degas pour le noir et blanc ne se limite pas à son activité de graveur mais s'exprime à travers l'ensemble des moyens d'expression qu'il pratique : dessins à la mine graphite, au crayon, au fusain, eau-forte, lithographie, monotypes mais aussi peinture et photographie. Comme le souligne Henri Loyrette, commissaire général de l'exposition, cet intérêt se vérifie sur toute l'amplitude de sa longue carrière, du milieu des années 1850 au début du xxe siècle. 
Le catalogue révèle la continuité de cette ligne mélodique, aisément perceptible dans tout l'œuvre de Degas, qui tient autant à la revisitation des mêmes thèmes (instantanés de la vie moderne saisis à l'Opéra ou dans les cafés-concerts, intimité des intérieurs bourgeois ou des maisons closes) qu'à leur résonance d'une technique à l'autre. L'essai de Valérie Sueur-Hermel consacré à " Degas, maître de l'estampe impressionniste " montre précisément son insatiable curiosité technique, son goût pour les " cuisines " de graveur, qu'il partage avec Camille Pissarro et Mary Cassatt. Marcellin Desboutin, à l'été 1876, ira même jusqu'à écrire que Degas est devenu une " plaque de zinc ou de cuivre noircie à l'encre d'imprimerie ". Le goût de l'épreuve unique conduira Degas à réinventer le monotype, qui se situe aux confins de l'estampe et de la peinture, et dont il devient un maître inégalé. 
" Le soir je digère et je photographie au crépuscule ", écrit Degas à Henri Rouart le 12 août 1895. En pratiquant passionnément la photographie pendant quelques mois, en 1895, alors qu'il a 61 ans, Degas cède là encore à son désir dévorant d'expérimentation et prolonge, comme le décrit Flora Triebel, ses recherches sur les effets de clair-obscur entreprises dès ses débuts par le dessin et l'estampe : " l'atmosphère de lampe, ou lunaire ". Sylvie Aubenas rappelle que Degas est lui-même entouré d'amateurs, comme ses amis, les Halévy : leurs albums rassemblent des photographies de Degas A travers une large sélection de pièces issues de la riche collection de la BNF et de grandes institutions françaises et étrangères, le catalogue propose une approche inédite de l'œuvre d'Edgar Degas à travers son intérêt constant pour le noir et blanc qui lui confère une place singulière parmi les artistes impressionnistes.
