Josef Albers' rigorous investigations into color have had a decisive effect on art in the twentieth century and beyond. His teaching posts at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College and Yale enabled him to bequeath his theories to several generations of artists and designers, from Max Bill and Mark Rothko to Eva Hesse and Ray Johnson. The core themes of Bernd and Hilla Becher's extensive work from the early 1960s on were the coal mines and steel mills in the German ruhr region and other iron smelting regions of the world, from Lothringen to Pittsburgh. By way of a contribution to the European Capital of Culture "Ruhr.2010" program, the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop has compiled a comprehensive exhibition with photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher on this key subject. The exhibition centers on the "industrial landscapes," as the two artists called them. The Bechers did not seek to depict these areas as individual architectural objects, but rather to contextualize them as complete facilities and heavy industry complexes in their urban and rural environment. Now that iron smelting as an industry has almost completely disappeared from the Ruhr region and the European coal mining industry is following hard on its heels, this collection of impressive pictures, which includes photographs from the German Siegerland region, Great Britain, France, and the USA, provides an overview, which we can already deem to be nostalgic, of a past era of industrial history. Our publication accompanies the exhibition with a total of 154 duotone plates of mines and iron works from all over the world. Heinz Liesbrock, art historian and Director of the josef Albers Museum, wrote the introductory essay to this publication. As well as famous Becher icons, the volume also features many previously unpublished photographs.

Joachim Brohm Bwas' Ruhr documents the industrial decline of the West German valley from which it takes its name--an area that was once home to Germany's coal mining and steel production centers, as well as other heavy and light manufacturing, and later became famous for its high degree of air pollution. This work, made between the late 1970s and the mid-80s, made Brohm one of the first German photographers to engage with the issues raised by American landscape photography--both that of the nineteenth century and the topographical work being done from 1970 onwards--and to transport it into the European context in which it has since thrived. Ruhr is an integral link between U.S. and European photography, whose significance is confirmed with its first complete publication here.

This collection of quiet, intense black-and-white portraits contains three groups of photographs of American citizens in relation to U.S. war missions during the past 30 years. The most recent pictures present people who demonstrated in 2006 or 2007 against American involvement in the current Iraq war. They are accompanied by shots, made more than 15 years earlier, of soldiers who were just about to leave for their initial deployment in the first Gulf War. The third series, spanning from 1983 to 1984, was made at the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It presents individual portraits of visitors paying tribute to the victims of war in Southeast Asia. None of the close-up shots gathered here conveys allegiance to any particular political orientation. Each simply expresses the irreplaceability of the individual and the importance of honoring his or her memory as the most basic form of humanity. In his catalogue essay, Heinz Liesbrock writes, "Her black-and-white photographs concentrate entirely on the human physiognomy in order to reveal the subjects' inner reality. The pictures dispense with all topical attributes which would make it possible to read an external context, such as profession, social position or any kind of concrete contextual intention, into them. We are therefore in a certain sense left alone with these pictures."

The American artist Ann Mandelbaum, born in 1945 and now living in New York, began as a photographer and has turned once again to photography after having devoted herself for some time to painting.She creates in her still-life-like photographs and luminous photograms an unlocalizable, secretive and unsettling reality of her own, which confronts us - even when her subject is not the human body - with the themes of physical decay and sexuality. It is in fact this very mixture of the alien and the familiar, of corporal landscapes and mummified flora and fauna, the changing point of view, that gives these works their ambivalent sensuality.Her work possesses symbolistic characteristics and could without difficulty be placed within a tradition in which mystery and riddle were of central importance in art. In Ann Mandelbaum's work, however, the metaphors for destruction and alienation of the body are also expressions of a particular contemporary situation in intellectual history.
