Linguistics and Aphasia is a major study of recent developments in applying psycholinguistics and pragmatics to the study of acquired language disorders (aphasia) and their remediation. Psycholinguistic analyses of aphasia interpret disorders in terms of damaged modules and processes within what was once a normal language system. These analyses have progressed to the point that they now routinely provide a model-based rationalefor planning patient therapy. Through a series of case studies, the authors show how the psycholinguistic analysis of aphasia can be assessed for its effectiveness in clinical practice. Pragmatic approaches to the study of aphasia are of more recent origin. Ruth Lesser and Lesley Milroy evaluate their considerable significance to the study of aphasia and their relevance to practical issues of diagnosis and treatment. Controversial analysis, in particular, offers a fruitful and productive framework within which to assess the functional adequacy of the language used by aphasic speakers in everyday contexts.

PALPA has been designed as a comprehensive psycholinguistic assessment of language processing in adult acquired aphasia. Intended both as a clinical instrument and research tool, PALPA is a set of resource materials enabling the user to select language tasks that can be tailored to the investigation of an individual patient's impaired and intact abilities. The detailed profile that results can be interpreted within current cognitive models of language. The materials consist of sixty rigorously controlled tests of components of language structure such as orthography and phonology, word and picture semantics and morphology and syntax. The tests make use of simple procedures such as lexical decision, repetition and picture naming and have been designed to assess spoken and written input and output modalities. Particular attention has been paid to practical use of the tests in the clinic and comprehensive guides have been included that help to suggest which selection of test may be appropriate for each aphasic person. Each test is also accompanied by detailed instructions of how and why it was constructed, how to use it, and by presenter's forms and marking sheets. PALPA is supplied as two ring binders with each subtest being a separate sheet, making it easier to take them out to photocopy. There are 6 sections, as follows: • bk. 1. Introduction • bk. 2. Copy masters The first ring binder includes sections 1-3 and the second 4ring binder sections 4-6.

La bateria EPLA, adaptación española del PALPA, es una batería de tests que puede servir de instrumento de evaluación de las capacidades psicolingüísticas de pacientes adultos con afasias adquiridas. El enfoque desde el que se ha elaborado EPLA es el de la Neuropsicologia Cognitiva y permite a psicólogos y neuropsicólogos, de orientación tanto teórica como aplicada, conocer con bastante detalle las habilidades lingüisticas intactas y las que han sufrido algún deterioro. El perfil obtenido se puede interpretar dentro de los modelos psicolingüisticos actuales, explicitados en la Introducción.EPLA consta de 58 pruebas rigurosamente controladas y está dividada en cuatro partes: Procesamiento Fonológico, Lectura y Escritura, Comprensión de Palabras y Dibujos y Comprensión de Oraciones. Las distintas pruebas hacen uso de tareas sencillas, por ejemplo, decisión léxica, repetición o denominación de dibujos, encaminadas a explorar la comprensión y producción del lenguaje hablado y escrito.En cada una de las 58 pruebas se hace una pequeña descripción de la misma con indicación de las variables controladas y de las razones por las que se incluye tal prueba y se proporcionan posibles causas o explicaciones de los distintos patrones de respuesta obtenidos. Además se hacen algunas sugerencias sobre cómo continuar la investigación para obtener un informe más detallado. Cada prueba va acompañada de hojas de presentación, recogida de datos y hojas resumen, asi como de los datos normativos de 22 sujetos sin daño cerebral.

Cognitive neuropsychology is already radically influencing the clinical practice of aphasia assessment and therapy. It has made it possible to analyse individuals' language disorders through a psycholinguistic model and to quantify and evaluate the effects of intervention. The complementary methods of conversation analysis are also being introduced into assessment, with the potential for bringing a further structured approach to intervention.
