Victorian Thinkers contains studies of four of the most influential critics of 19th-century British culture. Each was heralded a prophet in his own lifetime, and yet each was also regarded as misguided, and even mad, by his contemporaries. Their interests in art and culture led them to develop views on society and economics. Carlyle was a writer of extraordinary stature, radical in thought and style; Ruskin, who began his career as a critic of painting and architecture, developed his views to produce critiques of economics and social welfare; Arnold was a poet and literary critic, a definer of "culture" who later turned to social issues; and Morris, renowned for his work as artist and designer, championed a revolutionary socialism which would honour the civilizing effects of the arts. Ruskin, the great Victorian critics of art and society, had an enormous influence on his age and our own. A highly successful propagandist for the arts, he did much both to popularize high art and to bring it to the masses. A brilliant theorist and practical critics of realism, he also produced the finest nineteenth-century discussions of fantasy, the grotesque, and pictorial symbolism.  Most who have written about this outstanding Victorian polymath have approached him either as literary critics or as art historians. In this book, which was first published in 1985, George P. This book explores the larger realm of the knowledge infrastructure where texts are received, reconstructed, and sent over global networks.The sixteen essays collected in The Digital Word continue Landow and Delany's exploration of the new fluid, digitized text begun in Hypermedia and Literary Studies (1991), which focused on the linking of text, graphics, or sound into structures typically bound within a single computer or local-area network. This book explores the larger realm of the knowledge infrastructure where texts are received, reconstructed, and sent over global networks. It covers text management, textual resources and communication, and working with texts.In their introductory essay, Landow and Delany address the impact of such developments as the dematerialization of text (which exists only as a piece of code) and the manipulability of text-based computing (searches, editing, comparison, and analysis), which shifts the balance of power from text to reader. Digital texts; the law, sources, distribution, and management of texts; and the need for new procedures that will make explorations of the boundless universe of text more effective are touched on as well.Current examinations of text management include the FreeText Project and personal information retrieval, a taxonomy of text-management software, and markup systems (including a clear, authoritative discussion of Standard Generalized Markup Languages). Essays in the next section take up such disparate aspects of textual resources and communications as corpus-based linguistics, networked library services, personal docuverses for the individual scholar, and the new forms of scholarly communications created by electronic mail and electronic conferencing. A concluding section on working with texts surveys what has been variously called computer criticism, computer-aided criticism, and electronic text analysis in relation to textual editing, literary interpretation, and our practice of reading and writing in an electronic age.

In this study, first published in 1979, Landow contends that Hunt’s version of Pre-Raphaelitism concerned itself primarily with an elaborate system of painterly symbolism rather than with a photographic realism as has been usually supposed. Like Ruskin, Hunt believed that a symbolism based on scriptural typology – the method of finding anticipations of Christ in Hebrew history – could produce an ideal art that would solve the problems of Victorian painting. According to Hunt, this elaborate symbolism could simultaneously avoid the dangers of materialism inherent in a realistic style, the dead conventionalism of academic art, and the sentimentality of much contemporary painting.  George Landow examines Hunt’s work in the context of this argument and, drawing on much unknown or previously inaccessible material, shows how he used texts, frames, and symbols to create a complex art of mediation that became increasingly visionary as the artist grew older. This book is ideal for students of art history.

This book traces the sources and development of Ruskin's aesthetic and critical theories. In his attempt to skirt the danger of excessive emotion and association in art, Ruskin's struggle with the sublime but not the picturesque, is, along with the pathetic fallacy, examined. These concepts, too, are considered in light of Ruskin's continuing religious and intellectual development. Finally, Ruskin's loss of faith is analyzed in relation to the problem of allegory in art.
