<p>First impressions of London and its environs suggest that country houses are unlikely to survive in large numbers, but closer inspection reveals that many are still standing. Some of these are of outstanding importance while many others are of interest. Some are now surrounded by highrise housing, some by industrial premises; others have small areas of park or garden, and a few still have extensive, almost rural surroundings; most are still intensively used. The area covered by this book extends from London to the M25, which sliced through the country round London in the late 20th century. This book is the first to address the history of these houses, concentrating on those that still exist, while giving some indication of the major lost ones as well, and includes plans of most houses listed, and full-color illustrations of each, as well as information on owners, architects, landscape design, building materials, and styles.</p>

Chaque année, lors de la grande procession de Lille, une dizaine de mystère étaient joués du haut de chariots qui tenaient lieu de scène. Les acteurs appartenaient aux compagnies de quartier qui se disputaient les prix accordés aux meilleures pièces. Composés et joués tout au long du XVe siècle, ces mystères inédits sont heureusement connus par un manuscrit, hélàs unique, conservé à la Herzog August Bibliothek, à Wolfenbuettel. La plupart des soixante-douze textes dramatiques qu'il contient sont des pièces bibliques d'une longueur moyenne de cinq cent cinquante vers. Vingt-et-un sont des mystères inspirés du Nouveau Testament et quarante-trois de l'Ancien Testament, dont une partie traite de motifs inconnus du Mistere du Viel Testament. Les quelque autres traitent de l'histoire romaine et du légendier chrétien. Ce premier tome renferme les douze pièces qui, inspirées du Pentateuque, représentent l'histoire sainte depuis la création d'Adam et d'Eve jusqu'à la remise des Tables de la Loi à Moïse. Les mystères suivants paraîtront dans les quatre tomes à venir.
