Chaque année, lors de la grande procession de Lille, une dizaine de mystère étaient joués du haut de chariots qui tenaient lieu de scène. Les acteurs appartenaient aux compagnies de quartier qui se disputaient les prix accordés aux meilleures pièces. Composés et joués tout au long du XVe siècle, ces mystères inédits sont heureusement connus par un manuscrit, hélàs unique, conservé à la Herzog August Bibliothek, à Wolfenbuettel. La plupart des soixante-douze textes dramatiques qu'il contient sont des pièces bibliques d'une longueur moyenne de cinq cent cinquante vers. Vingt-et-un sont des mystères inspirés du Nouveau Testament et quarante-trois de l'Ancien Testament, dont une partie traite de motifs inconnus du Mistere du Viel Testament. Les quelque autres traitent de l'histoire romaine et du légendier chrétien. Ce premier tome renferme les douze pièces qui, inspirées du Pentateuque, représentent l'histoire sainte depuis la création d'Adam et d'Eve jusqu'à la remise des Tables de la Loi à Moïse.
