Workshop tells the story of Kenneth Tyler―one of the twentieth century's preeminent master printers, publishers, and arts educators―who, after establishing himself in 1965, set about to engage some of the most creative minds of the postwar era. Tyler's is a story of brilliant success built on that rare entrepreneurial mix of technical wizardry, perseverance, and drive. The other half of this story is that of a young and bold National Gallery of Australia. Positioned on the other side of the globe, the Gallery actively pursued works of the highest caliber, in the development of a collection born in the very same era that witnessed the stratospheric rise of the print. Together, Tyler and the Gallery have amassed a collection that charts a revolution in the field―a redefinition of the print into an entirely new species of a hybrid nature and often enormous scale. Printmaking produced some of the most iconic works of the postwar era. This publication spans the four decades and four workshops of the master printer Kenneth Tyler. Accompanying a scholarly essay written by Dr. Jane Kinsman are 77 texts that focus on a myriad of artists and their printmaking projects―from Bauhaus legends, Abstract Expressionists, leading Abstract artists and the stars of the Pop age, to several artists who we are about to discover in more depth―all of them engaged with the Tyler workshops to produce work in an astounding variety of form. Through prints as series, sets and portfolios, to prints as folding screens, lead reliefs, vacuum-formed plastics, prints that are part industrial manufacturing, part embossing and metallic collage, prints as sprayed paper pulp, prints measuring ten metres and prints in three dimensions that take leave of the wall completely―here is the postwar print in all of its multifaceted possibilities and technical innovation. Tyler chose a dedicated and highly skilled team of printers and workshop staff who each played a key role in the realisation of artists' projects. Some of those past members of the Tyler Graphics team reminisce about behind-the-scenes insights into the centrality of collaboration to the workshop and the workings of the print studio.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) considered his drawing to be a very intimate means of expression - the "purest" and "most direct." His method of execution varied from charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher's burin, lithographic tusche, to paper cut. Frequently his composition was of the female form. This small book reproduces drawings from late in the artist's career, when he created series of drawings in the great French tradition of the artist's book (livre de peintre), where original prints are combined with carefully selected texts. Included are illustrations from Jazz and other works.

This small book illustrates three sets of etchings by James McNeill Whistler. The influence of the French Realist tradition along with Rembrandt and the Dutch school are clearly apparent in the so-called French Set of 1858, a series of twelve figure studies and village scenes from early in his career in Paris. In London, Whistler produced an evocative series of sixteen etchings of the Thames and its surrounds: its people and haunts – the land, water, and cityscapes. The Thames Set was completed in 1861. In September 1879 Whistler set off for Venice to spend many months making etchings of its palaces and seascapes. The Venice Set and a later Venice series are notable for their beautiful painterly, poetic qualities – sublime visions rather than depictions of the everyday.

R. B. Kitaj has emerged as one of the most independent-minded and influential artists since his student days in the late 1950s, producing an extraordinary body of work - not the least have been his prints.This study reveals that Kitaj's prints have functioned as a visual diary, documenting the vicissitudes of an artistic life, a life characterized by a constant search for new subject-matter and new means by which to depict it.Amongst other things, The Prints of R. B. Kitaj explores Kitaj's collaborations and associations with some of the most gifted printers of today, including Chris Prater, Aldo Crommelynck and Stanley Jones. It also demonstrates how he drew inspiration from some of the key figures in American modern literary life, such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Robert Creeley and Robert Duncan.As a life-long bibliophile, Kitaj initially found the direct impetus for much of his art in books. More recently, however, it is the images from his favourite artists which have proved influential.Jane Kinsman's study is notable for its insight into Kitaj's print oeuvre.
