Bullecourt 1917: Breaching the Hindenburg Line

The assault upon the formidable Bullecourt in April and May 1917 by three British divisions - the 7th, 58th and 62nd - and three Australian divisions was initially designed to assist Allenby's Third Army break-out from Arras. This book tells the full story of a battle that can be seen as an archetype of the horrors of trench warfare.The first Bullecourt battle of 11 April came to be regarded as the worst Australian defeat of the war, when Australian infantry assaulted without artillery and tank support. They were badly let down by the British tanks - but the Britsih tank crews were let down in turn by their own commanders, who put them in the forefront of the attack in Mark II training tanks, prone to malfunction and not armour-plated.Significant numbers fought their way into the German lines at Bullecourt against all odds, including legendary ANZAC soldiers Major Percy Black, Captain Albert Jacka and Captain Harry Murray. The Australians cemented their reputation as a reliable and formidable force, not merely a colonial adjunct to the British Army. Marshal Foch described the soldiers of the AIF as 'the finest shock troops in the world'. British and Australian forces launched repeated offensives throughout May in an effort to capture Bullecourt. It became an awful battle of attrition fought with savagery on both sides. After three more weeks of fighting, which saw stretcher bearers sniped at and hand-to-hand struggles with bayonet and entrenching tool, the village was eventually taken. Approximately 17,000 soldiers were sacrificed to capture the village and nearby trenches; 4,124 of those soldiers killed were listed as missing and have no known grave. Was possession of the pile of rubble that was Bullecourt worth the butcher's bill, when plans were already in place to switch the main push to Flanders that summer?The bloody sacrifices made by Australian and British soldiers notwithstanding, the fighting at Bullecourt resulted in the first breakthrough of the 'impregnable' Hindenburg Line. Author Paul Kendall has contacted many of the living relatives of those who fought to bring a human face to those terrible statistics.

In the spring of 1917 the Arras offensive was begun to break the stalemate of the Western Front by piercing the formidable German defenses of the Hindenburg Line. The village of Bullecourt lay at the southern end of the battle front, and the fighting there over a period of six weeks from 11 April until late May 1917, epitomized the awful trench warfare of World War I. In Bullecourt 1917, Paul Kendall tells the stories of the fierce battles fought by three British and three Australian divisions in an attempt to aid Allenby's Third Army break out from Arras. Approximately 10,000 Australian and 7,000 British soldiers died, many of whom were listed as missing and have no known grave. The battle caused much consternation due to the failure of British tanks in supporting Australian infantry on April 11th, but despite the lack of tank and artillery support the Australian infantry valiantly fought their way into the German trenches. It took a further six weeks for British and Australian infantry to capture the village. This book tells the story of this bitter battle and pays tribute to the men who took part. Crucially, Paul Kendall has contacted as many of the surviving relatives of the combatants as he could, to gain new insight into those terrible events on the Hindenburg Line.

The Battle of the Aisne fought during September 1914 was a savage engagement and a complete shock for the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who were trained to fight mobile wars. When they reached the north bank of the Aisne the "Old Contemptibles" would be stopped by the Germans entrenched on high ground armed with machine guns, supported by heavy artillery. The allied commanders would naively send their troops into futile assaults up exposed slopes, devoid of cover to attack the German lines dug into positions on the ridges along the Chemin des Dames and concealed by woodland. The British soldier stood very little chance as they could not see their enemy and were met by a maelstrom of artillery and machine gun fire. They didn't even have grenades. Each assault would fail and they would retreat to their start lines with their ranks severely depleted. The BEF lost 12,000 casualties. Their "Victorian" commanders, who were not trained to fight a modern war, were lost for a solution or even a strategy. The battle is significant because it was on the Chemin des Dames that the first trenches of the Western Front were dug and was where the line that would stretch from the Swiss frontier to the North Sea began. The Battle of the Aisne saw the dawn of trench warfare and stalemate which would last for the next four years.
