Turn of the century Paris is often referred to as the belle époque, a golden age of affluence and artistic creativity before the turmoil of the First World War. This was the Paris of artists such as Bonnard, Rodin, Seurat and Vuillard, as well as writers and musicians such as Debussy, Zola and Maupassant. The Eiffel Tower had just been built and the Moulin Rouge was in its heyday - Paris was the cosmopolitan capital of pleasure and culture. The architecture of the period, however, has generally been neglected known only for the Art Nouveau designs of Guimard's Metro entrances and restaurants such as Maxim's. This book, based on a thorough survey of Parisian buildings of the era, connects the medievalism of Viollet-le-Duc, the classical tradition of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and early developments in metal and concrete construction with modern pioneers like Perret, de Baudot and Sauvage. Including the exuberant designs by architects working in the 'Ritz style', as well as the work of a multitude of architects whose names are at present unknown, Parisian Architecture of the Belle Epoque is a truly comprehensive and visually sumptuous study of this under exposed period of architecture.

Roy Johnston and Declan Plummer provide a refreshing portrait of Belfast in the nineteenth century. Before his death Roy Johnston, had written a full draft, based on an impressive array of contemporary sources, with deep and detailed attention especially to contemporary newspapers. With the deft and sensitive contribution of Declan Plummer the finished book offers a telling view of Belfast’s thriving musical life. Largely without the participation and example of local aristocracy, nobility and gentry, Belfast’s musical society was formed largely by the townspeople themselves in the eighteenth century and by several instrumental and choral societies in the nineteenth century. As the town grew in size and developed an industrial character, its townspeople identified increasingly with the large industrial towns and cities of the British mainland. Efforts to place themselves on the principal touring circuit of the great nineteenth-century concert artists led them to build a concert hall not in emulation of Dublin but of the British industrial towns. Belfast audiences had experienced English opera in the eighteenth century, and in due course in the nineteenth century they found themselves receiving the touring opera companies, in theatres newly built to accommodate them. Through an energetic groundwork revision of contemporary sources, Johnston and Plummer reveal a picture of sustained vitality and development that justifies Belfast’s prominent place the history of nineteenth-century musical culture in Ireland and more broadly in the British Isles.

There was no greater representative of the intense interest in Irish culture in Belfast in the decade before the 1798 Rebellion than Edward Bunting. Born in 1773 in Armagh, he showed early musical talent. He moved to Belfast via Drogheda at the age of 11 as apprentice to William Ware, the first organist of St Anne's parish church. His interest was captured by the famous 1792 Belfast Harp festival, at which he transcribed the airs. His fame rests on his three pioneering volumes of what he called the "ancient music of Ireland," collected during tours of the countryside where the traditional music was kept alive by singers, pipers and fiddlers, as well as harpers. Less well known is his career as organist, piano soloist, and promoter of concerts. His musical energies culminated in Belfast with the four-day sacred-and-secular music festival which he organised in 1813, at which the first near-complete performance of Handel's Messiah was given. This is a long-overdue account of Bunting's considerable contribution to the musical life of the Belfast of his day, reconstructed from existing sources and new research into contemporary documents.
