Now in Paperback Jenny Holzer gained widespread recognition when texts from her Truisms series appeared on a vast electronic advertising board overlooking Times Square. Throughout her career, Holzer has intrigued audiences by placing her provocative messages in unexpected contexts, including posters, metal plaques, stone benches, electronic signs, television spots and Web sites. Her canny melding of the mediums of mass culture with an unadorned, emphatic language is perfectly attuned to an age of advertising slogans, headlines and sound bites. Yet despite the very public nature of much of her work, Holzer has also created more intimate pieces for display in galleries and museums. Her stunning installation at the 1990 Venice Biennale was awarded first prize and brought the artist international acclaim, proving that Holzer's art is equally compelling wherever it is shown--in a setting calculated to reach the masses or in the most rarefied art spaces. This book features a complete collection of the artist's writings, up to and including her 1996 text for a monument in Erlauf, Austria, accompanied by color photography of the entire range of her installations and projects. In an insightful essay and a lively interview with the artist, Diane Waldman traces the history of Holzer's series of writings and the varied environments in which they have appeared. The volume is rounded off with a chronology, exhibition history and bibliography.

In her art, Jenny Holzer (b. Gallipolis, Ohio, 1950; lives and works in New York) looks for ways to translate language into visual objects. She relies on a variety of forms of presentation to do so; most widely known are her illuminated letters and projections. Looking for new material to work with, she came upon texts from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: government documents that had been redacted before being released to the public, including political directives, descriptions of torture methods, autopsy reports, and statements made by American officials, soldiers, and prisoners. Only partly legible because of the widespread blackening, these documents form the basis for Holzer's new pictures--after more than three decades, she returned to the art of painting in 2010. The color, size, and individual expression hark back to the artist, whereas the geometric shapes are the work of the unknown "censors" and the legible fragments of text are taken from the original documents. Holzer's subtle interventions illustrate how much there is that must not be seen. The pictures thus also function as formalist works of art that inevitably call to mind the long history of avant-garde abstraction, especially the legacy of constructivism and its idea that art may serve social purposes.

<p>Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region in the north-east of Italy, bordered by Austria and Yugoslavia, and dotted with vineyards, seaside resorts, Gothic duomos, Romanesque towns, grottoes, contemporary art, and Roman ruins. Many of these elements in the landscape have been around for hundreds of years, but one has not: contemporary art. Yet throughout this region works by Marina Abramovic, John Armleder, John Baldessari, Mike Bidlo, Louise Bourgeois, Paul McCarthy, Enzo Cucchi, Jenny Holzer, Tom Sachs, Andres Serrano, and Lawrence Weiner amongst others have occupied castles, squares, gardens, churches, landmark buildings, basements, and kitchens. The result is a subtly transformed landscape worth visiting, be it in reproduction or in Italy. The book itself is a fantastic object, realized with a semi-flexible plastic cover, held together by screws, and filled with an array of gadgets.</p>
