Since the inaugural Frieze Art Fair in 2003, Frieze Projects, an off-shoot of London's frieze magazine, has pursued an ambitious curatorial program, inviting a selection of emerging and established artists to realize work responding specifically to the fair context. Artists--including Martha Rosler, Lawrence Weiner, Andrea Zittel, Richard Wentworth, Paola Pivi, Liam Gillick, Aleksandra Mir, gelitin and Jeremy Deller--have contributed work ranging from site-specific installations and 35mm films to impromptu performances and print publications. Called the "most exciting showcases of specially commissioned work from new and established artists in the world," by the London Observer, the Projects are accompanied by the Frieze Talks program, which has brought such leading cultural figures as Thomas Crow, Zaha Hadid, Jacques Rancière, Peter York, Linda Nochlin, David Adjaye and Roberta Smith to the podium. This volume is the first printed record of the speaking events, and features texts from the lectures and panel discussions, as well as essays on the commissioned projects.

The heterogeneous punk spirit of Urs Fischer is in full threat in this catalogue from his recent retrospective exhibition (including many new works) at Kunsthaus Zrich. All materials were considered fair game, and Fischer took every possible liberty in the museum space. He cut huge walk-through holes in the gallery walls and leaned the removed pieces on their edges in the rooms. He made burning wax sculptures, put obstacles on the ground, and hung a DANGEr sign above it all. As curator Mirjam Varadinis says, "the familiarity of everyday motifs is undermined in a process of metamorphosis that renders [the work] uncanny and even threatening." Of course, a dose of humor, drawing upon the grotesque, informs the work as well. You can try to name influences, inspirations, and related artists--Thek, Nauman, Barney, Fischli & Weiss--but Fischer is sui generis.

In a 2008 review, New York Times art critic Roberta Smith glowingly endorsed German-born, Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Ruby, calling him "one of the most interesting artists to emerge in this century. That's only eight years, of course," she added, "but the claim may stick." Ruby--who was born in 1972--uses whatever media suits his ideas; projects have included sculpture, collage, installation, painting, ceramics, video and printmaking. This monograph surveys the diverse oeuvre of the ever-popular German artist Imi Knoebel, whose adventures in the elementary functions of form and color seem more relevant than ever. Opening up new perspectives on selected phases of Knoebel's career, and tackling many lesser-known explorations alongside his classic geometric/minimalistic fiberboard paintings, it examines, in chronological order, the artist's time at the Darmstadt Werkkunstschule and the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he studied with Joseph Beuys, and where he met one of the artists with whom he would become most closely associated, Blinky Palermo. Also addressed here is Knoebel's relationship to American Minimalism, and his early explorations of serial light photography and printmaking. This volume focuses on these early activities and recent paintings from the 1990s to 2009.

An online program translated the message as, "Barbara fisherman are not there." More realistically, it translates, "Barbara Visser ain't here."
